Navigating NMU Donor-Funded Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide to Requirements and Opportunities

Securing funding for graduate education requires careful planning to ensure financial stability throughout your academic journey. Northern Michigan University (NMU) offers various avenues for students to fund their master's studies, including loans, grants, graduate assistantships, scholarships, and personal resources. NMU partners with GradSense, a service of the Council of Graduate Schools, providing students with resources for managing their financial status. Donor-funded scholarships, entrusted to the university by alumni and community members, represent a significant opportunity for NMU students. These scholarships often have specific qualifications, making it essential to understand the requirements and application process.

Understanding Donor-Funded Scholarships at NMU

Donor-funded scholarships are monies that have been entrusted to the university by alumni and involved NMU community members to support students. Scholarships that are offered through the NMU Foundation are privately funded by donors who have created these opportunities for a variety of reasons. Often, these scholarships or endowments are established to honor a family member, classmate, mentor, friend or faculty member. In some instances, the scholarship supports a specific area of study or students from a particular region.

Eligibility for Donor-Funded Scholarships

Eligibility for First Year and Transfer Awards: All Scholarships are represented in annual amounts; 50% is available each semester. There are no exceptions (including fall graduation). All Scholarships require full-time (12 or more credits) enrollment. Enrolling in web-based or off-campus courses may impact this award. Global Campus online students and International students are not eligible to receive these scholarships.

Key Requirements and Considerations

Donor-funded scholarships often have specific qualifications for awardees. These criteria and award amounts vary from scholarship to scholarship. Some scholarships are need-based, while others are not.

Research Funding

Loans

Student loans for graduate and undergraduate students at NMU are overseen by the Financial Aid Office. You must be enrolled at least half time (4 credits) in order to qualify. NMU sends rosters of qualifying students to a federal database.

External Grants and Fellowships

Funding based on your academic research field can be available through outside sources, with small supports offered by NMU programs. Check with your academic department for opportunities to work with and be paid for lab and research work. NMU's Office of Sponsored Programs houses grant and research funding resources. Search for external grant opportunities: Grant Forward. The FFF Program is part of the King-Chavez-Parks Initiative which was created by the Michigan State Legislature in 1986 to increase graduation rates for students underrepresented in postsecondary education.
