By 1932, a strip of small stores, including a shoemaker, tailor shop, the Boyett Butcher Shop, Lipscombs Pharmacy, and Hollicks Boots, began to appear.

Loupot played a significant role in Northgate's early development by establishing a store that sold books and provided lunches for the cadets of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.
