Paper weight: Paper weight determines a paper’s thickness and is measured in pounds (lbs) or grams per square inch (gsm). A higher paper weight doesn’t automatically mean it’s “better” or less likely to exhibit feathering or bleedthrough. In fact, there are some thin papers, like Tomoe River S, that are treated to prevent these things from happening. Paper weight affects how many sheets can be combined into a notebook.
Showthrough: Showthrough (also known as ghosting) is an effect where ink can be seen through the page.
Bleedthrough: Bleedthrough occurs when ink soaks through the paper to the other side. This happens when a paper is too absorbent, too thin, or if you linger in one spot with an inky pen.
Feathering: Feathering happens when ink absorbs into a paper’s fibers and causes fuzzy and web-like marks.
