Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine: An Overview

Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-KPCOM) is a private medical school located in Davie, Florida and has an additional campus in Clearwater, Florida. As an academic division of Nova Southeastern University, NSU-KPCOM holds the distinction of being the first osteopathic medical school established in the Southeastern United States.

History and Evolution

Founded in 1981 in North Miami Beach, Florida, the institution was initially known as the Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine (SECOM). In 1986, with the addition of the College of Pharmacy and the College of Optometry, the school became the "Southeastern University of Health Sciences." A significant turning point occurred in 1994 when Southeastern University merged with Nova University, resulting in the creation of Nova Southeastern University. The College of Osteopathic Medicine relocated from North Miami Beach to Davie, Florida, in 1996.

In September 2017, NSU received a substantial $200 million commitment from the Patel Family Foundation, leading to the renaming of the College of Medicine as the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. Further expansion occurred in 2019 with an additional $50 million donation from the Patel Family, enabling NSU to establish a second DO program in Clearwater, FL, as part of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
