Finding Strength and Purpose: Prayers for Nursing Students
Nursing is undeniably a challenging profession, demanding immense devotion, time, and sacrifice. Nursing students often grapple with stress from tests, clinical rotations, and the struggle to maintain a balanced life. Feelings of being overwhelmed, questioning one's path, and even losing faith are common. In these moments of doubt and frustration, many nursing students turn to prayer for guidance, strength, and renewed purpose. From uplifting spirits to aiding decision-making, prayers offer solace and support in numerous ways. Some patients and nurses find comfort in the healing power of prayer.
The Significance of Prayer in Nursing Education
Prayer can serve as a powerful tool for nursing students, providing emotional support, enhancing focus, and fostering a sense of connection to something larger than themselves. Many nursing students find that prayer helps them to manage the stress and anxiety associated with their studies, clinical rotations, and exams.
Building Confidence and Overcoming Doubt
One of the most significant benefits of prayer for nursing students is the bolstering of confidence. Students often pray for the ability to believe in themselves, to recognize their potential, and to trust that they have been called to this profession for a reason. Prayers for confidence can be particularly helpful when facing challenging exams or difficult clinical situations.
- Affirming one's abilities and knowledge: "I trust in my abilities and knowledge as a nursing student. I am prepared and confident to excel in my exams."
- Seeking confidence in test-taking and clinical skills: Praying for the confidence to hold a hand, whether at the beginning of life or as life comes to a close, highlights the deeply human aspect of nursing.
Finding Calmness and Focus
The academic rigor of nursing school can be overwhelming, making it difficult to concentrate and retain information. Prayer can help students cultivate a sense of calmness and focus, allowing them to approach their studies with a clearer mind.
- Praying for calmness and focus: "I pray for calmness and focus as I approach my exams. I will remain grounded and centered during this time of challenge."
- Affirming the ability to remain calm and confident: "I affirm my ability to remain calm and confident during my exams, knowing that I have prepared to the best of my abilities."
- Seeking wisdom and a positive attitude: "I pray for the wisdom to approach my exams with a clear mind and a positive attitude. I will remain optimistic and motivated throughout the process."
Seeking Strength and Resilience
Nursing students often encounter obstacles and challenges that test their resilience. Prayer can provide a source of strength to overcome these difficulties and to persevere in the face of adversity.

Prayers for Academic Success
- "Father, as I sit for my exams, may your favor rest upon me. Enable me to recall what I have studied and answer each question correctly. May your peace surround me and help me concentrate as I do my papers. In you, Lord, I commit my fate. Whatever the outcome, I will glorify you and rejoice in your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, I pray."

Help my patients and me to pull through every difficult situation that may present itself. At the end of each day, let me rest in the assurance that I have done the right thing. In Jesus’ name, I pray."
- "Dear Lord, as I care for the sick and weak, give me strength and courage to endure the heavy demands of the job. When my strength fails me, uphold me, Lord, and strengthen me. May your grace be sufficient to keep me strong. In Jesus’ name, I pray."
- "God, you are a compassionate father. As I care for my patients today, please help me to emulate you. I pray for wisdom and understanding so that I may offer them quality service. May your healing power flow through my hands as I compassionately care for the sick. In Jesus’ name, I pray."
- "Father in heaven, bless these hands we pray. Anoint these hands with your mercy and grace so that your healing touch will be extended through their touch. May each person who receives care by the touch of these hands experience the compassion that flows from your suffering, saving love, the comfort of your healing presence, and the competence and commitment of spirit filled, conscientious care givers."

Guide my feet, my hands, and my mind, and grant me success this day. I have complete confidence that with your guidance, I will have success today. In Jesus’ name, I pray."
Prayers for Strength and Endurance
- "Dear Lord, give me grace and wisdom to overcome the challenges before me. As I care for my patients, let your love shine through me and help me to remain objective."
- "Dear Lord, the pain and suffering around me is sometimes too much that I get weary. May I draw strength from you, Lord, as your word encourages me. As my patients look up to me, I pray that I rise above my struggles and give them hope. May your steadfast love uphold me now and always."
Prayers for Peace and Comfort

- "Father, even when the turmoil around me gets overwhelming, in you, I draw my comfort. Be gracious to me, Lord, and shower me with your steadfast love whenever despair threatens to overshadow me. Comfort me, Lord, so that I may find the strength to comfort my patients. In Jesus’ name, I pray."
The Importance of Compassion and Caring
Many prayers emphasize the importance of compassion and caring in nursing practice. Nursing students often pray for the ability to treat their patients with kindness, empathy, and respect.
- Seeking the ability to love everyone: "Lord allow me to set aside any judgments or preconceived notions that I may hold for someone in order to give them the care and attention they deserve."
- Praying for patience and kindness: "I pray you would allow me to see the good in everyone I meet, even if others do not see it. I pray you would allow me to set my own selfish desires aside to do the work that you called me to do."
Commitment to Caring Ceremonies
Some nursing programs incorporate ceremonies that emphasize the importance of caring and compassion in the nursing profession. Trinity’s nursing department celebrated this annual Commitment to Caring Ceremony on Monday, October 1. Every year, Trinity’s nursing faculty and senior nursing students encircle the newest members of the College’s nursing program. These ceremonies often involve prayers and blessings, reinforcing the spiritual and ethical dimensions of nursing practice. As the event’s guest speaker, nursing graduate Mindy Beenes ’06 shared her experiences as a professional nurse. “As you start your clinical rotations, remember that clinical is the time to gain as much knowledge and experience as you can,” she said. “It was a reassuring feeling that there were so many people there supporting our journey in becoming nurses,” said Hofman.
Finding Purpose and Meaning
Ultimately, prayer can help nursing students to find deeper purpose and meaning in their work. By connecting with their faith and values, students can develop a stronger sense of calling and commitment to the nursing profession. It's easy to question the reason you even chose this major at all. It's so easy to lose your faith when it gets tested almost every day. And the only one who can get my mind back on the greater picture is God.
- Seeking guidance and reminding of the bigger picture: "Lord I get so caught up in the yesterdays and the todays that I get stuck wondering if this is all worth it. I catch myself doubting myself and questioning if I am meant to do this. Lord open my eyes. Remind me of the beauty in this work. Remind of the lives I will impact and the hearts I will touch. Remind me that this work is not about me, but about being anything and everything a patient needs me to be. Remind me that I am not in control. You are my guide and my rock. Lord remind me to be grateful for every single moment I spend pursuing this passion."
- Expressing gratitude and seeking continued guidance: "God I thank You for getting me to this point. I thank You for those who helped me along the way. I thank You for every heartache, failure, and mistake that has brought me here. I thank You for allowing me to pursue a dream so deeply seeded in my heart. Lord I thank You for the support I receive every single day from the ones I love. I would be nothing without them. Lord I thank You for the nurses and the teachers who have come before me to pass down their knowledge and skills to me. Lord I ask that You continue this journey with me each and every day. Guide my mind, my hands, and my heart. Allow me to be confident in Your guidance and trust in my own instincts and abilities because they were given to me by You. God let me spread Your love to everyone I come in contact with. God give me the ability to see the bigger picture. You gave me this passion and You have gotten me to where I am right now and it is You who will get me to where I need to be."
