Navigating the NYU Academic Calendar: Key Dates and Deadlines

Students at New York University (NYU) rely on the academic calendar for crucial information regarding important dates and deadlines throughout the academic year. These calendars provide a comprehensive overview of the semester, including start and end dates, registration periods, holiday schedules, and examination periods. This article aims to provide a detailed guide to understanding and utilizing the NYU academic calendars, drawing upon specific dates and events from the provided data.

Accessing the NYU Academic Calendars

NYU provides multiple academic calendars to cater to the diverse needs of its student population. Tandon School of Engineering students, for instance, have access to both the general NYU Academic Calendar and the Office of the Registrar's Academic Calendar. Similarly, Graduate Stern students can access the Academic Calendar for Graduate Day and Langone classes. These calendars contain dates most relevant to their specific programs. It's important to note that Parsons Paris and Mannes Prep follow different calendars.

Key Components of the Academic Calendar

The academic calendar encompasses a wide array of important dates and deadlines. These include, but aren't limited to:

  • Start and End Dates of Semesters: These dates mark the official commencement and conclusion of each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). For example, the Fall 2025 semester in Abu Dhabi begins on September 2, 2025, and ends on December 11, 2025.
  • Registration Periods: These periods are designated for students to enroll in courses for the upcoming semester. Initial Fall Registration for the NYC campus, for instance, begins on Monday, March 24. Initial Spring Registration begins Monday, November 3.
  • Add/Drop Periods: Following the start of the semester, students are typically given a period during which they can add or drop courses without academic penalty. • Withdrawal Deadlines: Students who need to withdraw from a course after the add/drop period can do so until the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawing after this date may result in a "W" on the transcript. The Withdrawal Period Begins Wednesday, September 10 (for full-term courses). Last Day to Withdraw Tuesday, November 18 (for full-term courses).
  • Holiday Schedules and Breaks: The calendar outlines university closures and breaks, such as Thanksgiving Recess, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Memorial Day. During these periods, no classes are scheduled, and university offices may be closed.
  • Final Exam Periods: The calendar specifies the dates for final examinations at the end of each semester. The Fall 2025 final exam period in Abu Dhabi is December 15-19, 2025.
  • Degree Conferral Dates: These dates mark the official awarding of degrees for graduating students. Fall 2025 Degree Conferral Date Saturday, January 31. Spring 2026 Degree Conferral Date Sunday, May 31. Summer 2026 Degree Conferral Date Monday, August 31.
  • Legislative Days: On these days, classes meet according to a specific schedule (e.g., Monday or Friday schedule). October 14, 2025 Legislative Day - Classes meet according to a Monday schedule.
  • Make-Up Days: These are days built into the calendar to compensate for classes missed due to holidays or unforeseen circumstances. The university has built two makeup days into the fall academic calendar, which can be used if a faculty member cannot hold class because of religious observance. Make-Up Days, General Tuesday, December 16 - Wednesday, December 17.

Religious Observances

NYU recognizes the importance of religious observances and provides accommodations for students who may need to be absent from class due to religious commitments. The university has built two make-up days into the fall academic calendar, which can be used if a faculty member cannot hold class because of a religious observance. Faculty may also use Canvas to deliver course content asynchronously if a class cannot meet because of religious observance. Students may be absent from class for religious observance without being penalized. These absences do not count against the excused absences noted in their syllabi. Students must inform the instructor at the beginning of the course of any anticipated absences due to religious observance. The policy for religious observances can be found in the university’s academic catalog.

Holiday Make-Up Schedule and Computation of Credit Hours

Classes canceled due to holidays must be made up according to the Holiday Make-up Schedule. Separate schedules are available for the Fall and Spring semesters. According to ABA Rules, a “credit hour” is an amount of work that reasonably approximates: (1) not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and two hours of out-of-class student work per week for fifteen weeks, or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time; or (2) at least an equivalent amount of work as required in subparagraph (1) of this definition for other academic activities as established by the institution, including simulation, field placement, clinical, co-curricular, and other academic work leading to the award of credit hours. For purposes of this Standard, fifty minutes suffices for one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction. An “hour” for out-of-class student work is sixty minutes.

Important Considerations
