Mental Health and Wellness Counseling at Steinhardt

While enrolled in the program, you will prepare for your practicum and internship experiences by completing a counseling lab in individual counseling practice. The lab pairs you with a classmate who will role-play various counseling scenarios with you online. Clinical training is central to the development of all aspiring counselors. It provides the opportunity to apply the theories learned in the classroom to a real-world setting. All students must complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship under the supervision of a licensed or certified counselor. Mental health and wellness counseling students will complete their practicum and internship hours under the supervision of a licensed mental health counselor.

Mental Health and Wellness Practicum

The mental health and wellness practicum provides you with experience in a mental health setting. You must complete 8-10 hours per-week (100 hours per-term) under the supervision of a licensed mental health counselor. As a student, you will train at the same site throughout two terms to complete the 600-hour internship (300 hours per term). You must train for a minimum of three full days or 19 hours per week - in each consecutive internship term - under the direct supervision of a licensed or certified counselor. We are unable to arrange for placement schedules to occur exclusively during evening or weekend hours. The placement team is responsible for securing a placement that meets your program requirements. There are a variety of experiences that will assist in developing your clinical skills and competencies for the program, graduation, and future licensure/certification. Your placement sites are not guaranteed to align with your areas of interest. Students cannot complete field placement outside of the continental United States or Hawaii. Students will not be placed internationally, including on US military bases or in US territories. Due to the nature of the placement, students are not able to complete their placement hours at their current place of employment. Students cannot work with clients with whom they currently have other relationships or have the potential to have other relationships.

Waitlist and Appointment Availability

One of the main reasons university counseling centers refer students to our practice is our ability to offer timely appointments, even during peak periods. While many campus centers experience waitlists of two to three weeks-or longer-especially around exam periods or during high demand, we make prompt access a priority.

Common Mental Health Challenges for Students

The most common mental health challenges university students face today are anxiety and depression. Research shows that about one-third of college students have been diagnosed with or experience symptoms of anxiety, and roughly one-quarter struggle with depression. These conditions often arise from academic pressure, stress, social challenges, and life transitions common in university settings. Other concerns include loneliness, stress, and treatment-resistant cases, which may require specialized care.

Mind in Motion works closely with university counseling centers to provide timely, personalized support tailored to each student’s needs, whether through therapy, medication management, or additional options like ketamine-assisted therapy for treatment-resistant cases

Therapy Engagement and Duration

Weekly engagement and commitment to therapy are key ingredients for success. The duration of therapy varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy for specific issues, while others prefer long-term therapy for more in-depth exploration and growth. While your therapist will work with you to determine the most appropriate duration, we find that consistent weekly sessions often yield the most noticeable and lasting changes.

Eligibility for Services

Mind in Motion welcomes referrals for university students seeking additional support beyond what their campus counseling center may provide. Any undergraduate or graduate student can access our services with a referral from their university counseling staff or by reaching out directly if they need specialized care, ongoing support, or faster appointment access. We work closely with university counseling centers to ensure every student-regardless of their year, background, or specific needs-has the opportunity to receive care, whether for individual therapy, group sessions, medication management, or treatment for more complex mental health concerns.

Confidentiality

At Mind in Motion, we deeply respect your privacy and the trust you place in us. Your decision to seek therapy is confidential, and we do not share information about your care with your parents, faculty, or anyone else without your explicit permission. We understand that maintaining your privacy is essential for feeling safe and supported.

Making an Appointment

To make a counseling appointment at Mind in Motion, university students typically start by contacting their university counseling center for a referral. Once referred, our team will work with you to schedule an initial appointment promptly. The number of counseling sessions available depends on each student’s needs and the plan developed between Mind in Motion therapist, the student, and, if necessary, the referring university centre. Some students may have short-term support, while others go into a long-term therapy or try a specialized treatment such as medication management or ketamine-assisted therapy for treatment-resistant cases.

Academic Support Systems

Our students are surrounded by academic support, with access to dedicated advisors, tutoring, and flexible ways to connect online.
