Navigating Oakton Community College Summer Classes

Oakton Community College provides various opportunities for students to continue their education during the summer. Understanding the schedule, registration process, and available resources is essential for a successful summer term.

Summer Session Overview

Oakton offers two summer sessions: a seven-week session and an eight-week session. These sessions typically begin in early June and end in late July. The Academic Calendar contains specific dates for each session. Most summer sessions meet two to four times per week, depending on the course. Students can enroll in up to ten credit hours during the summer. Academic advisors can assist students who need more credit hours.

Instruction Types

Oakton offers four different types of instruction to accommodate various learning preferences and schedules. Students should check the course catalog to determine if a class is synchronous (scheduled days/times) or asynchronous (no set days/times) and whether the course is in-person, online, or hybrid.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Oakton College's Important Dates detail key dates and deadlines in the academic year for students, faculty, and staff. Meeting deadlines is an important part of the financial aid process. Applicants must meet particular dates to be considered for the most financial-aid options. It is the student's responsibility to notify the College when withdrawing from class(es). A student must officially withdraw before the semester deadline. Tuition refunds are only given when a student officially withdraws by the refund date.

Registration

Eligibility

You can register for classes after applying and completing all Enrollment Steps. If you have enrolled in credit classes within the past three years, you do not need to reapply.

Priority Registration

Priority registration allows select groups of students to register for classes for the upcoming semester one to three days before registration is opened to all students. There is no additional fee for priority registration. For summer classes, priority registration typically begins in early March, with open registration starting a few days later. For example, summer priority registration begins March 9, with open registration starting March 12.

Registration Options

Students have options for registration. You can register online or in person with a photo I.D. at the Enrollment Center. Registration typically begins several months before the start of a semester and ends on the first day of class or until the class reaches maximum enrollment.

Late Registration

Students can register on the first day of the scheduled class meeting as long as there are open seats available and all course prerequisites and requirements have been satisfied. Once the course has started, online registration is restricted. Registration must be done manually by the Enrollment Center and requires a late registration override from the instructor. Students must contact the course instructor to request registration past the start date. If the instructor allows the student to join the course late, they will provide an electronic Late Registration Override on the student’s account (the division office may be contacted for assistance with this step). All of these steps must be completed in order for the Enrollment Services staff to complete registration. The Enrollment Center is not able to add students to classes without the late registration override. Students who register past the course start date must abide by all deadlines for the registered course, including refund deadlines.

Late Start Courses

Oakton schedules a number of "late start" courses in addition to typical class offerings. Late start classes are available for a number of general education credits such as English and math, as well as classes necessary for completing degrees and certifications. You'll find the most current information, including day and time, credit hours, instructor and the number of seats available.
