Understanding Old Trail School Tuition and Flexible Tuition Program
Old Trail School, nestled within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, is an independent, coeducational day school serving students from preschool through eighth grade. Founded in 1920, the school is dedicated to nurturing children by developing a strong academic foundation, a respect for themselves and others, and a love of learning. Old Trail School cherishes the creative spirit in each child and is committed to a stimulating liberal arts curriculum with high academic standards which prepares students to thrive in challenging secondary schools. The student community is diverse, consisting of motivated, capable learners, who are guided by teachers, parents, and often by their peers. The faculty are supportive role models and caring, engaging educators. They are valued by our families for their creativity, their passion for teaching and learning and, most of all, for their joy in being a part of this vibrant community.
The Value of an Old Trail School Education
Old Trail School aims to instill confidence, creativity, and character in its students. The school believes that these qualities are crucial for success in high school, private school, college, and future careers. The focus on a whole-child approach to education yields healthy social-emotional and physical development, creativity, kindness, and academic achievement. When it comes to academic potential, the most important factor in a child’s success is the quality of their teacher. The environment surrounding a child has a great effect on their capacity to learn and grow. The time to invest in your child’s education is from the early stages of development through preadolescence, when their cognitive, social and physical growth happens most rapidly.
Tuition and Affordability
Old Trail School is committed to making its education accessible to as many families as possible. The school recognizes that the cost of tuition can be a barrier for some families and offers a Flexible Tuition Program to help bridge the gap. A large part of our unparalleled education is our commitment to affordability. We never want cost to stand in the way of a child’s potential. That’s why we partner with families to make an Old Trail education as accessible as possible. As one of the only schools in the region to offer a Flexible Tuition program for students in Jr. Today, more than one-third of our students benefit from need-based flexible tuition, with Old Trail awarding $1.7 million annually in grants and scholarships.

Applying for Flexible Tuition
The application process for the Flexible Tuition Program involves several steps:
- Initial Contact: Prospective parents should contact the Admission Office to express their interest in the School and the Flexible Tuition Program. You will receive information including directions for completing the Financial Aid for Student Tuition (FAST) application and a checklist with important deadlines.
- FAST Application: Families must complete the Financial Aid for Student Tuition (FAST) application. This third-party evaluation service works with us to provide a need-based analysis that includes a recommendation of what a family should be able to contribute toward tuition. Submit your application by December 1. You will be required to submit a copy of your most recent W2 forms and federal tax return (including all schedules, federal form 4506, and supplemental questions included in the FAST application) by December 15 each year.
- Tax Information Submission: Please include the School’s name on the outside of the envelope to ensure faster processing of your application. Complete form 4506 Request for Transcript of Tax Return - Click Here for the form. Please note, you will only need to fill out questions 1-4 and sign the form. Please do not remit any fees.
- Deadlines: The online submission deadline for returning student applications is December 1, and the deadline for new students is January 15. Your tax return and form 4506 must follow the submission and be postmarked by December 15 (January 15 for new students). The online submission for need-based assistance opens on November 1, with a December 15 deadline for returning student applications. To ensure full consideration for aid, we encourage current families to submit the Flexible Tuition application between November 1 and December 15 (prior to the academic year of enrollment). For new families, the application should be submitted by the admissions application deadline.
- Review Process: The School’s Flexible Tuition Committee reviews the FAST application and assessment of need and determines your eligibility for and amount of institutional financial aid. After submitting your Clarity application, our Flexible Tuition Committee will review both the application and the assessment of your family's need. The committee then determines eligibility for a tuition reduction.
- Award Notification: The goal is to have an award determination made by the time re-enrollment contracts are issued in February. Any approved tuition adjustment will be documented in your child’s Enrollment Contract. Your financial aid award is documented in your Enrollment Contract.
Important Considerations
- Application Timing: Because institutional financial aid funds are limited, you are encouraged to submit the FAST application as soon as possible and before the December 1 deadline (prior to the academic year of enrollment) to ensure full consideration.
- Admission Decision: Your application for financial assistance does not affect the decision to accept your child for admission into the School; however, you must complete the admission process before a financial aid award can be made.
- Contractual Obligation: All families enter a contract with a school whereby they are financially obligated to pay the full annual tuition for their child to attend the school, regardless of withdrawal for any reason.
- Confidentiality: Please note that the flexible tuition process is confidential and does not influence admission decisions. However, it must be completed in tandem with the admission process, and flexible tuition awards are only finalized once a student has been accepted.
