The Oliverian School: An Alternative Approach to College Preparation and Tuition Overview

The Oliverian School, situated in the scenic White Mountains of New Hampshire, offers a unique educational experience for students in grades 9-12 seeking a college-preparatory environment. Founded in 2003, Oliverian distinguishes itself by providing an alternative to both traditional and therapeutic schools. With a focus on individualized learning, a high staff-to-student ratio, and comprehensive support systems, Oliverian aims to inspire and support students as they prepare for the complexities of higher education and beyond.

What Sets Oliverian Apart?

Unlike traditional schools, Oliverian embraces an experiential approach that values both successes and setbacks as learning opportunities. This fosters resilience and prepares students for the emotional, social, and academic demands of college and beyond. Oliverian is a non-profit, alternative, college-prep boarding school for adolescents who have not thrived in traditional settings. It fills the gap between traditional and therapeutic schools, providing the right mix of support and guided independence necessary for students to successfully find and occupy their place in the world.

Oliverian is not affiliated with any other schools or programs. The school maintains a small, intimate setting with an average class size of just 7 students. This allows for personalized attention and a supportive learning environment.

Support for Diverse Learners

Oliverian is equipped to support students with a range of challenges, including school avoidance, anxiety, ADHD, and ASD. The school also has experience with LGBTQ+ students and is committed to cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of its community. Oliverian School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Academics and College Preparation

Oliverian School is a college preparatory school. Over 90% of graduates matriculate directly to college or university. In 2013-2015, some students attended University of California: San Diego, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, SUNY University at Binghamton, University of Colorado Boulder and University of Vermont. Academically, summer is most importantly a time for credit recovery and transcript enhancement. Recovery can help students graduate on time or, in some cases, early by offering a “bonus” term. Transcript enhancement involves taking or retaking challenging courses with extra support for deeper learning, a better grade, and a more college-ready transcript.

The school offers a range of academic support services, including:

  • Advising: Every student is assigned an advisor who meets with them daily to address learning and social needs.
  • Counseling: Oliverian has three full-time masters level or above therapists/counselors. Every student is assigned a therapist to work on the psychological/emotional issues that are challenging them, and led to their decision to attend Oliverian. Each therapist meets with their students for a minimum of once per week. Additionally, a therapist may decide to involve the family in the counseling process. The post-lunch meeting is to map out and address ongoing learning support for that student. The end-of-day check-in is to determine where they stand in preparation for support during their evening study hall.

Student Life and Activities

Oliverian fosters a vibrant community where students are encouraged to explore their interests and develop their passions. Students help create and select extracurricular activities. Depending on interest, students might ski, shop, spend a day at the beach in Maine or at a local lake, go into town for pizza or Thai food, hike, rock climb, go to the movies, et cetera.

The school also recognizes the importance of maintaining connections with family and home. Students can go home to visit. Moving back and forth between school and home is an important part of our school culture and helps students (and families) learn to manage transitions. We have regular school vacations between each term during which all students leave campus. Students also have a limited number of home visits allowable each term.

Technology and Freedom

Oliverian takes a balanced approach to technology. Students can use his/her cell phone and computers. It is critical that students learn experientially how to manage these freedoms. However, during the school day we are cell-phone free. We offer feedback, support, and counseling when students are found to be abusing technology.

Food and Nutrition

Meals are prepared by a trained chef using locally sourced-often organic, free range, and grass fed-ingredients.

Tuition and Admissions

The yearly tuition for boarding students is $96,800. This comprehensive fee includes wrap-around support for each student, encompassing a counselor, social/emotional coach, academic advisor, team lead, and dorm parent.

Oliverian practices rolling admissions because we know that when a child is struggling with school avoidance, anxiety, ADHD, ASD, or social challenges, waiting can feel impossible. It is never too late to apply to Oliverian School.

Visiting and Connecting

Prospective students can speak with current student, both during a campus visit and via video calls.
