HP Omen Transcend 14: A Comprehensive Review for College Students and Professionals
The HP Omen Transcend 14 attempts to bridge the gap between gaming prowess and professional portability, offering a blend of power and sleek design. This review delves into its features, performance, and overall value, providing insights for college students and professionals seeking a versatile laptop.
Design and Build Quality
The HP Omen Transcend 14 boasts a sleek aesthetic, encased in a sturdy, all-aluminum chassis. Its slim 14-inch build and lightweight design make it feel more like a productivity laptop than a gaming rig. The laptop weighs 3.7 pounds and measures 12.3 x 9.2 x 0.7 inches. The black anodized aluminum chassis features a nice flat finish. The design is understated, avoiding the hyper-stylized look often associated with gaming laptops, making it suitable for professional environments and college lectures.
Lifting the lid reveals a glossy panel surrounded by thin bezels, with another Omen logo sitting at the bottom of the screen.
However, the matte coating, while present, doesn’t entirely prevent smudges from appearing on the body. Some users have noted a crackling sound when lifting the laptop from the side while open, raising some concerns about the build.
Display: A Visual Treat
One of the most striking features of the Omen Transcend 14 is its display. The 14-inch, 2880 x 1800 OLED panel offers a 120 Hz refresh rate, providing vibrant colors and deep blacks. The color depth is exceptional, making it a visual treat for both gaming and content creation. In fact, the display has been described as the most beautiful display on any gaming laptop ever tested.

The display automatically cycles from 48 Hz to 120 Hz, depending on the content, optimizing battery life and visual experience. It supports 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, ensuring color accuracy for creative tasks. The glossy finish enhances color vibrancy but can amplify reflections.
In color tests, the Omen 14 reproduced 135% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, significantly above the category average. It also performed well on brightness tests, hitting a peak of 392 nits on average, surpassing competitors like the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, ROG Strix G17, and Omen 16.
Keyboard and Trackpad
The Omen 14 features a four-zone RGB keyboard with customizable lighting via the Omen Gaming Hub app. The "lattice-less" design, with translucent borders around each key, enhances the glowing effect. While not offering per-key RGB lighting, the keyboard is comfortable for long typing sessions. Some users might find the comically wide shift and enter keys unusual, but others find them useful.
The 3.5 by 5.5-inch trackpad is spacious but lacks smoothness. Even with increased cursor speed, it can be difficult to navigate from one corner of the screen to another. The bumpy sound of fingers on the trackpad indicates a lack of friction. This can be a weak point, especially when a gaming mouse isn't available.
Audio Performance
The Omen Transcend 14 features dual HyperX-tuned speakers. Despite the tuning, the audio quality is average. Voices can get buried beneath sound effects and music, and the overall sound can be flat and unappealing. There is also an inconsistency in the audio, with the vocals occasionally getting lower or higher out of nowhere. The system lacks punchiness, and more volume would be welcome.

Ports and Connectivity
The Omen 14 offers a decent selection of ports:
- Left: Thunderbolt 4 port, audio jack
- Right: Two USB Type-A ports (one with HP Sleep and Charge)
- Back: HDMI 2.1 port, USB Type-C port with power delivery
It’s important to note that while the laptop can be charged from its left port, it bottlenecks performance. The rear USB-C port should be used for charging to ensure maximum performance. The laptop supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 for wireless connectivity.
Gaming and Graphics
Equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card with 8GB of vRAM, the Omen Transcend 14 is capable of handling modern games. However, the 65W TGP RTX 4060 is a compromise to keep the laptop thin, resulting in lower gaming performance compared to laptops with higher wattage GPUs.
While the RTX 4060 allows for enjoyable gameplay, it may not deliver the highest frame rates at maximum settings. For example, in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p, it hit below the 30 fps playability threshold with an average of 21 frames per second. Most demanding games are playable at 1440p with Ray Tracing. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use the display’s full resolution, as the average FPS in most games is really low at that resolution.
Productivity Performance
The Omen Transcend 14 excels in productivity tasks, thanks to its Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage. On the Geekbench 6.2 overall performance test, the Omen 14’s multi-core score of 13,248 is phenomenal. This makes it a great choice for students and professionals who need a laptop for demanding workloads like multitasking, content creation, and software development.

The laptop duplicated 25GB of multimedia files in 15 seconds at a transfer rate of 1,730 megabytes per second, which is a tad faster than the category average.
Battery Life
Battery life is a notable drawback of the Omen Transcend 14. On the Laptop Mag battery life test, which involves continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits, the Omen 14 lasted 4 hours and 10 minutes. However, with SAGV (System Agent Geyserville) mode for improved battery life, it bumped its longevity by an hour. This is considerably below the category average. Gaming on battery power will further reduce battery life to about an hour or two.
Heat Management
The Omen 14's touchpad remained cool at 83 degrees Fahrenheit, while the G/H key and underside hit 95 degrees, which meets our heat threshold exactly. While its hottest point hit 98 degrees at the rear center underside. The keyboard area of the laptop doesn’t overheat (it gets warm), no matter how intensive the performance load gets. Yes, the rear of the device gets hot, but not to the extent that it’s a problem.
Webcam
While benefiting from a 1080p camera, the Omen Transcend 14 isn’t particularly impressive beyond resolution. Details can appear blurry, and the overall image quality is average. For streaming or professional video calls, an external webcam is recommended.
Software and Warranty
The HP Omen Transcend 14 comes with Windows 11 and HP’s dedicated gaming app, Omen Gaming Hub. Through it, users can have their library of games listed, optimize performance through settings like Boost mode, which freed up RAM in real-time when I launched Elden Ring, and far more. It even features a light studio module that can let you edit its four-zone RGB. The Omen Transcend 14 comes with a one-year limited warranty.
Notable Features
- OLED Display: The vibrant and color-accurate OLED display is a standout feature, making it ideal for content consumption and creation.
- HyperX Audio Tuning: While the speakers themselves are average, the laptop includes ultralow-latency 2.4GHz wireless for connecting the HyperX Cloud III gaming headset without the need for a wireless dongle.
- Omen Gaming Hub: This software provides tools for managing games, optimizing performance, and customizing RGB lighting.
- Cooling System: The chassis pulls in air and, using a vapor chamber, creates a pressurized zone to blast heat out through the rear vents.
Potential Drawbacks
- Battery Life: The limited battery life is a significant drawback, especially for users who need all-day portability.
- Trackpad: The trackpad's lack of smoothness can be frustrating for everyday use.
- Audio Quality: The average audio quality may disappoint users who expect immersive sound.
- Gaming Performance: While capable, the RTX 4060's performance is limited by its 65W TGP, making it less competitive compared to other gaming laptops in its price range.
