Omicron Delta Kappa: A Legacy of Leadership

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK, or O∆K) was founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University. It stands as the first college honor society of national scope to give recognition and honor for meritorious leadership and service in extracurricular activities and to encourage the development of general campus citizenship. ODK's mission is to recognize outstanding leadership and to promote collaboration among student leaders who exemplify integrity and dedication. ODK seeks to identify, celebrate, and engage collegiate and community leaders from different backgrounds, perspectives, and generations.

Omicron Delta Kappa recognizes and encourages superior leadership and exemplary character. O∆K encourages collaboration among members across the five phases celebrated by O∆K: scholarship, athletics, service, communications, and arts. The organization supports collaboration among students, faculty, and other members of all ages and across these five pillars.

ODK network of 350,000+ spans higher education, business, entertainment, sports, mass media, and many other fields. The ODK name or symbol on a resume is instantly recognizable to fellow members as the certification of accomplished collegiate leadership.

Membership Requirements: A Closer Look

To become a member of ODK, students must meet specific criteria, encompassing academic standing, leadership experience, and personal qualities.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students (junior standing by credit or higher) and graduate students may apply for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa. Access to the online application is available during the first three weeks of each semester. Faculty, staff, alumni, and honorary membership is by nomination only, rather than by an application.

More specifically, undergraduate & graduate membership requires:

Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student standing by credit.
Rank in upper thirty-five percent of applicant’s respective class.
Receive a minimum number of Activity Points.
Distinguish themself in one of the five areas of leadership.
Be of unquestioned good character.
Receive a positive membership vote of seventy-five percent of the active circle present and voting.

Individuals who have achieved distinction in their own field of expertise, or who have rendered unusually significant service through their leadership in significant causes may be elected into Faculty, Staff, Alumni, or Honorary membership in Omicron Delta Kappa. Nominations are made by current or alumni members of ODK. Qualifications include exemplary character, scholarship and intelligence, service and leadership in campus or community life, good citizenship, and fellowship and consecration to democratic ideals. Alumni must have graduated more than 5 years prior to their nomination.

Key Requirements

Academic Standing: A student must be a junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (or 3.5 cumulative GPA). They must rank in the upper thirty-five percent of their respective class.
Leadership Experience: Demonstrate leadership in at least one of the five areas: scholarship, athletics, campus or community service, journalism, or creative and performing arts.
Character: Be of unquestioned good character.
Selection Process: Receive a positive membership vote of seventy-five percent of the active circle present and voting.

ODK Scholarships: Investing in Future Leaders

Omicron Delta Kappa offers scholarships to support members in their pursuit of graduate and professional education. These scholarships are designed primarily as tuition support of graduate or professional education. If you do not intend to go to graduate or professional school, it is recommended that you do NOT apply for a scholarship.

Application Details

The current cycle is closed and will reopen in February 2026. To access the application, please visit MyODK. If you are considering applying for a scholarship, we encourage you to read Scholarship Review and Selection Committee Chair David A.

The instructions mention written statements. Two written statement are limited to 500 words maximum response. Please specifically describe the duties of each O∆K office you held, focusing on your level of involvement and accomplishments that advanced the circle. You may also describe the level of involvement in O∆K activities while serving as a member of the circle. If your circle is not active, please explain your level of involvement with current O∆K activities. Graduate students are encouraged to include O∆K involvement as an undergraduate student and any current O∆K involvement in graduate or professional school.

Describe the most significant ways you have been active on campus (outside of O∆K), in the community, and in the world, and if you are in graduate/professional school now, in your professional field. Concentrate on those activities which best describe your leadership roles and accomplishments. Provide some detail about each activity: the time commitment involved, whether the activity is ongoing or one-time, the impact you had, and what you learned from your experience. The Scholarship Committee is interested in both the number of leadership activities as well as the depth of involvement as a leader.

Each applicant is required to have one reference complete a recommendation form. The recommendation form is considered material that is due on or before April 1. Please be sure that your recommender knows that their deadline for submittal is the same one that you have.

Timeline and Notification

Omicron Delta Kappa will select recipients in June 2026 and notify all applicants of the decision. Scholarship funds are distributed directly to the graduate institution after July 1. Omicron Delta Kappa does require a certified letter of enrollment from graduate school advisor confirming enrollment.

The O∆K Scholarship Review and Selection Committee will review applications beginning in the middle of April. We anticipate that it will take a month and a half to review and select the recipients. O∆K will provide scholarship award payments directly to the institution where the student is enrolled beginning in July.

O∆K requires the following items before payment will be made: scholarship acceptance, professional headshot, short summary biographical statement, proof of enrollment, the name of the institution where the student is (or will be) enrolled and student identification number, thank you note addressed to the O∆K Board of Trustees.

Scholarship Types and Amounts

Below is the expected list of scholarships and fellowships to be awarded in 2026. The scholarships can be used up to 3 years later by deferral. Final allocations and amounts will be set in January 2026.

Graduate Study Focus: Scholarships are designed to support post-baccalaureate study.
Non-Traditional Students: Non-traditional students should use the standard application and highlight all leadership activities both on campus and in the community.
Multiple Scholarships: There is only one application for all scholarships; there is no need to complete additional applications for specific scholarships.
Deferral: Applicants who are not currently enrolled in a graduate or professional program may defer the award for up to three years.

The financial concerns of today’s college students are well documented and quite real. Many secure student loans and work numerous hours each week in addition to attending class and contributing as leaders on campus and in their communities. Additional funds to support membership in Omicron Delta Kappa and pursue graduate and professional educational opportunities are needed.

Scholarships are the primary method of directly supporting collegiate members through philanthropy. Scholarships may be designated for collegiate members from specific circles, a geographic region of the country, historically underrepresented or marginalized populations, or within specific academic disciplines or leadership areas.

Donors may make a three-year commitment to contribute $1,000 a year in order to provide a current use scholarship. A gift of $25,000 is required to endow a scholarship, which may be named for an individual or an organization. Click here to make an online gift to the scholarship program.
