Several states have established scholarship portals to promote educational opportunities for their residents. South Dakota, for instance, has launched a Scholarship Portal managed by the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR). This portal provides students with easy access to a wide range of scholarship opportunities to help them fund their education and achieve their academic goals. The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship (SDOS) awards up to $7,500 over four years to eligible South Dakota high school graduates attending participating universities or technical colleges in the state. The goal is to prepare students for college success, provide affordable education, and encourage them to remain in South Dakota for further education.

The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship has specific academic requirements. If their ACT Composite or Superscore is 28 or higher, students will also need to meet minimum ACT subscores of 18 for English, 21 for Reading, 22 for Math, and 24 for Science. Students with ACT scores of 24-27 also need to complete high school curriculum requirements with a “C” or higher to be initially eligibility for the SDOS.
In North Carolina, the Opportunity Scholarship Program caters to families of students entering kindergarten through 12th grade. Awards range from approximately $3,000 to $7,000, based on a family’s household income. The Opportunity Scholarship may only be used for students entering traditional Kindergarten through 12th grade. Students are not required to be enrolled in a private school when they apply. However, Opportunity Scholarship funds can only be used for tuition and fees at registered private schools. The scholarship amount varies by award tier and may not cover the full cost of tuition and fees of every school.
University-Based Portals: Florida State University
Universities also utilize scholarship portals to manage and distribute funds raised through their foundations and private donors. Florida State University (FSU) awards numerous scholarships each academic year through the fundraising efforts of the Florida State University Foundation and the generosity of private donors. To be considered for any of these scholarships, students must click Sign In at the top right corner of this page. This will direct them to the login screen of the campus scholarship portal where they can log in using their FSUID and password to access and complete the general application as well as any supplemental applications for scholarships that they may be recommended for. After completing each of these steps, students can follow their application status on their dashboard.
These scholarships indicate “None” under “Action” and require no additional information from the student for consideration. Other scholarships for which students may qualify indicate “Apply” under “Action” and require additional information be provided for consideration. A list of these scholarships can be found once students log in to the portal by viewing Recommended Opportunities from the Opportunities tab.
