Navigating Housing Options at Oregon State University
Finding the right housing is a crucial part of the college experience. Whether you're a prospective student, a current undergraduate, a graduate student, or a transfer student, Oregon State University (OSU) and the city of Corvallis offer a variety of on-campus and off-campus housing choices to suit different needs and preferences. This article provides an overview of these options, including residence halls, on-campus apartments, family housing, and off-campus rentals.
On-Campus Housing
Oregon State University provides diverse on-campus housing options designed to foster community and support academic success. These options include traditional residence halls, suite-style living, on-campus apartments, and family housing.
Residence Halls
Campus residence halls offer traditional or suite-style living. Bedrooms are typically shared between two and three students. Suite-style units offer a shared in-unit kitchenette and/or restroom. As a residence hall resident, you'll also have a dining plan to use at food locations across campus.
Applying for Residence Halls
The application process for residence halls involves several steps:
- ONID Account: Once admitted to OSU (including students in the Degree Partnership Program and Educational Opportunities Program), students receive an OSU Network ID (ONID) account.
- Living-Learning and Special Interest Communities: Consider if you want to live in a Living-Learning Community or a Special Interest Community. Explore your options to determine what best suits your interests and needs.
- Part One of the Application: This part covers demographic and contact information along with your housing preferences. Completing part one early increases your chances of receiving one of your top choices.
- Part Two of the Application: Return to the housing portal to sign a UHDS Room and Dining Contract. Make sure you understand your contract before you complete it.
- Roommate Matching: Oregon State offers an online roommate matching process accessible via the housing portal that allows students to select their own roommate. Participating is optional.
- Room Assignments: Room assignments will begin in late July and continue throughout the summer.
Specific Application Periods
- Spring Term: The housing application to live on campus in a residence hall starting spring term opens Feb. 4.
- Current Students: The residence hall application for current students opens Feb. Students who attend the Second Year & Above Kickoff event on Jan. 27 receive early access to the housing application on Jan. 1.
- Transfer Students: The residence hall application for transfer students opens Feb. 1.

Orchard Court: Family Housing
Students who are married, have registered domestic partners, or have children living at home can apply to live in Orchard Court, Oregon State's family housing apartment community. The 107-unit apartment complex is situated on the northwest corner of campus, within easy walking and bicycling distance of other campus facilities. Living at Orchard Court provides a unique opportunity to live in a diverse multicultural community. Currently 65% of the student families are from countries other than the United States, and more than 70% of the student residents are graduate students.
Dining Options
Whether you choose to live on or off campus, Oregon State dining welcomes you. From cafes serving locally roasted coffee to restaurants offering fresh, house-made meals, there is plenty of selection across campus. If you live in a residence hall, you'll sign up for a dining plan to use at UHDS-operated locations, including Cascadia Market, our on-campus grocery store. All students can take advantage of OSU's Orange Cash program. Use the Orange Cash account on your OSU ID card to pay at campus dining locations and get a 10-percent discount on your purchases.
Housing for Transfer Students
Transferring to Oregon State? Living in the heart of Beaver Nation can be a great way to begin your journey at Oregon State. Each year students in their second year and above -- many of them transfer students -- call the Oregon State campus home. Several residence halls on the Oregon State campus are either partially or fully set aside for second-year and above students. OSU even has a hall with a dedicated transfer community so you can live with other Beavs who may be on a similar academic path to yours. As a residence hall resident, you'll have a dining plan to use at more than 25 locations, from micro-restaurants and cafes to the campus grocery market.
Halsell Hall is exclusively for second-year and above students, with one floor just for transfer students. While transfer students often live in our dedicated transfer community in Halsell Hall, you may also request to live in another community on campus, particularly if it aligns with your academic major, interest or identity.
On the first floor of Halsell Hall, there is a lounge set aside for transfer students. The Transfer Student Living Room is designed to give transfer students a space on campus to relax between classes, study with friends, and build a community. The Transfer Student Living Room has a study area with tables and a whiteboard, and a social area with a couch, chairs and a television. The attached kitchen has a small refrigerator, sink, stovetop and oven for students to use. Two bathrooms (one with a shower) are also available.
