Navigating the Costs of Osteopathic Medical School: A Comprehensive Guide
Pursuing a career in medicine is a significant investment, both in time and money. Understanding the financial landscape of medical education, particularly the tuition costs associated with osteopathic medical schools, is crucial for prospective students. This article provides a comprehensive overview of medical school expenses, offering insights into tuition fees and additional costs to help you create a realistic financial plan.
Understanding Medical School Tuition
How much does medical school cost? The cost of attendance is the cornerstone of establishing a student’s financial need, as it sets a limit on the total aid a student may receive for a given period of enrollment. The Cost of Attendance represents the anticipated costs that a learner may incur during the enrollment period. It does not represent the actual cost of tuition and fees. It is composed of direct costs (tuition and fees) and indirect costs (room and board, books and supplies, transportation and other personal/miscellaneous costs). It also represents the maximum amount of funding for the aid year.
To provide a clearer picture, here’s a breakdown of tuition and fees for various medical schools across the United States during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Note: Some schools, such as Weill Cornell, NYU Grossman, and Columbia, now offer debt-free financial aid, meaning that eligible students won’t have to take out loans. Depending on your financial need, tuition and fees may be entirely covered. Some medical school programs are tuition-free or offer tuition waivers. Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Additional Costs to Consider
Beyond tuition and fees, medical students face a range of additional expenses that can significantly impact their overall cost of attendance. When considering the full cost of attendance at each school, be sure to factor in additional costs such as housing and transportation-which will vary widely from student to student. Including the cost of living while in medical school, there are additional costs such as entrance exams and applications for aspiring students, as well as licensing and residency interviews for upcoming and new graduates.

- Housing: This can vary significantly based on location, from on-campus dormitories to off-campus apartments.
- Transportation: Costs depend on whether you need a car, use public transport, or live close enough to walk or bike.
- Books and Supplies: Medical textbooks and equipment can be expensive.
- Health Insurance: All learners are required to have health insurance. However, the cost of insurance is not included in the established COA. Learners that purchased UIW-sponsored insurance can request an increase to their COA after the insurance waiver deadline (September).
- Personal Expenses: These include food, clothing, and other daily living costs.
Financial Aid and Funding Opportunities
Navigating the financial aspects of medical school can be daunting, but numerous resources are available to help students manage costs.
Scholarships and Grants
Many WesternU colleges and programs offer incoming students recruitment scholarships based on the strength of a student’s admissions application and interview as well as their contributions to the community. A separate application is not required. Western University of Health Sciences provides financial support to recruit and retain outstanding students. No one should think that higher education is beyond his or her reach simply because of cost. With the help of federal, state, institutional and private funded scholarships and awards, students can achieve their educational goals for the future.
Student Loans
Students can seek private student loans from a variety of banks. Students will need to do their due diligence in finding the best student loan product to meet their needs.
Professional Judgment
The Office of Financial Aid is committed to the success of each of our students. The Financial Aid Administrator has the authority to exercise professional judgment, both before and after a student is awarded, if a student can document an extenuating circumstance warranting a change to data elements that may impact a student’s eligibility. Professional judgment may not be used to change the needs analysis formula (Cost of Attendance - Financial Resources = Need). To request that aid be reviewed due to these or similar extenuating circumstances, the student must write a letter explaining in detail the reason for the request. Students are encouraged to talk with the Director of Financial Aid regarding their unique circumstance to identify if they would benefit from submitting a professional judgment request. Appropriate documentation will be required to document the student’s extenuating circumstance. For example, if a student is claiming excessive medical expenses, he/she may be required to produce a statement from their insurance company outlining claims and payments. The student must be currently enrolled to request a professional judgment review. Requests must be received by the Office of Financial Aid no later than 1 month prior to the last day of classes for the current academic year. All decisions are made on a case-by-case basis after reviewing the student’s individual circumstances. The student should be aware that while the college will attempt to make a final decision promptly, there may be instances where additional information is required which may delay the decision.
Cost of Attendance Adjustments
Adjustments to the established COA are permitted for learners who have additional qualifying expenses during the enrollment period, such as childcare costs, laptop and software. This adjustment increases a learner's loan eligibility. If a learner purchased a laptop, tablet, required software or related accessories, they may submit a COA Adjustment to increase funding. If a learner has childcare expenses, not private elementary or secondary school tuition, they may seek additional funding. The budget can be increased by the weekly rate paid for childcare during the actual period of enrollment, with a maximum limit. If a learner participated in a UIWSOM-required COMLEX preparation service, they may seek additional funding. The preparation service (boot camp, tutoring, etc.) must be required by UIWSOM, not recommended. Receipts and verification of the requirement are required. If a learner must move outside of San Antonio for Year 3 Core Rotations, they may seek additional funding to account for the moving expenses. Receipts are required and the maximum amount is $2,500 net. In Year 4, funding allocations are provided for residency-related expenses. If a learner incurs expenses higher than the allocated amount, a COA Adjustment is permitted. Receipts are required demonstrating that the expenses were higher than the allocation.

Disbursement and Refunds
The institution will disburse funds that are available and ready for disbursement the week prior to classes beginning each semester. Tuition and fees will be paid using the students financial aid funds. Before any funds can be paid to a student’s tuition and fee account the student must be properly enrolled and they must meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. Once tuition and fees are paid and if the student has remaining funds available, the Office of the Bursar will process a refund for students to use for educational purposes, including their individual living expenses (e.g., room and board, transportation, personal expenses, and health insurance).
At Noorda-COM students will be enrolled in a fall and a spring semester each academic year. Therefore, student financial aid will be disbursed as two (2) payments. In the rare instance that a student is enrolled during the summer term, is eligible for summer aid, and has secured summer funding, a third disbursement will occur for the summer enrollment period.
Financial aid over the cost of tuition and fees is sent to the student.
