Navigating Legal Terrain: A Comprehensive Guide to Ohio State University Student Legal Services

For students at The Ohio State University, navigating the complexities of the legal system can be daunting. Fortunately, Student Legal Services (SLS) offers a valuable resource, providing legal advice and representation to OSU students. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of SLS, its services, and how students can access them.

Understanding Student Legal Services

Imagine it's "No Brainer Day," like February 27, 2025, and you'd rather not spend time researching legal assistance. As Hegarty from SLS puts it, "We are the lawyers for Ohio State students." SLS acts as a law office dedicated to serving the legal needs of OSU students, ensuring their rights are protected and they have access to legal guidance.

What SLS Does

SLS provides legal advice and representation to OSU students when the other party to the dispute is not a part of the University or one of its administrative units. Whether your specific area of assistance is listed, all students are encouraged to contact the Student Legal Services office if they have a legal conflict or question.

SLS offers assistance in a range of legal matters. For instance, if a student is charged with a criminal misdemeanor or traffic offense in Franklin County, SLS attorneys are present daily, representing students. SLS also represents students on civil matters in Franklin County.

Eligibility and Fees

Students are given the opportunity to waive the Student Legal Service’s fees in BuckeyeLink by the tuition and fee deadline, which is seven days before the start of the semester. However, if a student waives the fee, they are no longer eligible to receive SLS’s services for that participation year, which runs from August to August.

Confidentiality and Scope of Services

SLS is a law office, and student/client confidentiality and privilege are strictly protected and upheld. Communications shared with their staff and attorneys are protected and confidential. The office is supported by student fees, making its services free of charge to all eligible OSU Corvallis campus students.

Even if a student waives the fee, SLS can still provide general advice. For example, in a roommate situation, they can advise a student about their legal rights and responsibilities, even if the other person is also a student. SLS is very much led by what the student wants.

Accessing Student Legal Services

Contacting SLS is encouraged for any legal conflict or question. This office offers free notary services to OSU Corvallis students. A notary can verify signatures and certify documents for official use. Notary hours are the same as reception hours.

Buckeye Family Connection

Buckeye Family Connection is a source of news and information for students at Ohio State, which families have access to join, provided by Parent and Family Relations. Now that Buckeye Family Connection is really active, SLS finds that to be a better avenue to get information out to students. SLS often advises students that it is in their best interest to include parents in any situation. Students should be supported and guided, but not taken over.

Educational Workshops

The SLS team offers educational workshops on a variety of legal topics most important to students. They can create any workshop based on your needs.

Dispelling Misconceptions

When considering law offices, many people believe that the more you pay, the better service you get, but that is not necessarily true. SLS provides valuable legal assistance to students, regardless of their ability to pay high fees.

Student Legal Services at Other Universities

The Center for Student Legal Services has been providing Ohio University students with affordable legal assistance since 1997. It is a non-profit organization funded entirely by student enrollment in the program. Students can choose to enroll in the program as an option on their semesterly tuition bill. The cost of enrollment is $15 per semester, including summer sessions.

The Center for Student Legal Services provides Ohio University students with a wide range of legal services. They are staffed by two full-time attorneys who offer students legal representation for issues that are tried in Athens County courts. Their attorneys have experience in civil and criminal law and are dedicated to serving the students of Ohio University and bettering the community of Athens. Cases are always managed by a licensed attorney and never by pre-law students, interns, or the administrative office staff.

Ohio University is one of the few universities in the United States where students have access to quality legal services at an extremely affordable cost. The $15 enrollment fee is minimal compared to the potential costs of legal services from a traditional law office. Even if students do not require representation in court, those who choose to enroll in their program are entitled to notary services as well as general legal advice on a number of topics. Furthermore, enrollment in their program may entitle students to legal representation via the student legal services offered by other universities in Ohio. They have reciprocity agreements with the student legal services offices at Bowling Green University, Kent State University, Ohio State University, University of Toledo, and Wright State University, which allow Ohio University students who are eligible for their legal services to be referred to their student legal services for limited issues, and vice versa.

Student Legal Services are provided to Corvallis OSU students through the law firm of Access the Law and paid for through the Corvallis campus student incidental fees.
