Beyond the Textbook: A Critical Look at "Out of Syllabus"
"Out of Syllabus" as a title suggests a narrative that ventures beyond the conventional, exploring themes and experiences not typically found in structured learning environments. It evokes a sense of spontaneity, discovery, and the unpredictable nature of life's lessons. The title may imply something unique or captivating, but the actual delivery does not always match the anticipation. Several films bearing this title, or exploring similar themes, exist across different languages and cinematic traditions. Examining these films reveals common threads and divergent approaches in portraying life's unscripted curriculum.
Love, Loss, and Life's Unexpected Turns
One iteration of "Out of Syllabus" tells the present-day story of Deva (Pradeep Doddaiah) and Divya (Hrithika Srinivas), who return to their college for a felicitation ceremony. The narrative unfolds, revealing how they met years prior and how love blossomed between them. Their decision to marry is met with unforeseen challenges, leading to their separation. This storyline highlights how aspects of life that cannot be conveyed through formal education are often learned from personal encounters and the difficulties that life brings. There are no educational programs that instruct students on how to sustain relationships.
The film attempts to narrate a simple story in a non-linear manner, which at times appears too confusing. However, the last 15 minutes of the film deliver a message about ego being the root of all problems. Performance-wise, Pradeep Doddaiah and Hrithika Srinivas deliver decent performances, complemented by the contributions of Yogaraj Bhatt and Acyuth Kumar.
Revenge and the Education System: "Akshara"
Another film, "Akshara," uses the backdrop of corporate education to weave a revenge drama. Sanjiv Bhargav (Sanjay Swaroop), the founder of Vidya Vidhan Educational Group, is determined to maintain his educational institutions' top ranking. This ambition leads to immense pressure on students, with some tragically resorting to suicide. Akshara (Nandita Swetha) joins Vidya Vidhan as a physics teacher, and Sritej (Sritej) is drawn to her good deeds.
The narrative explores Akshara's hidden motives, her targeting of Sanjiv, and the reasons behind her transformation. While revenge dramas can be compelling, "Akshara" suffers from bad writing and weak narration. The film's technical aspects are also lacking, with poor camera work and misplaced background music. Nandita Swetha delivers a strong performance in the titular role, but the comedic elements feel forced and out of place.

The first half of "Akshara" is slow and filled with unnecessary scenes, with the story truly beginning with the pre-interval twist. The flashback episode offers some substance, explaining Akshara's motivations, but it is not enough to salvage the film.
A Malayalam Take: College Life and Acceptance
The 2006 Malayalam film "Out of Syllabus," written and directed by Viswanathan, presents a different perspective. It tells the story of Gopikrishnan, a village lad who becomes the target of jokes when he attends a city college. Through perseverance and the help of Namitha, he rises to become the College Union Chairman. He also encounters Gayathri, an old schoolmate. This film focuses on themes of acceptance, self-improvement, and overcoming adversity in a college environment.
