Pasco-Hernando State College: A Comprehensive Overview of History, Academics, and Campus Life

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) is a comprehensive, multi-campus learning-centered institution serving the educational needs and interests of its community by awarding certificates, diplomas, associate and baccalaureate degrees. This article delves into the rich history of PHSC, its academic offerings, and the vibrant campus life it provides to its students.

A Foundation Built on Community Needs

In the mid-1960s, community leaders recognized the need for accessible higher education in Pasco and Hernando counties. Their lobbying efforts led to a significant milestone in 1967 when the Florida Legislature established Pasco-Hernando Community College. It became the 28th and final addition to the state's system of community colleges. This marked a crucial step in providing local residents with opportunities for advanced learning and career development.

A Timeline of Growth and Expansion

The college's journey began with the purchase of a 100-acre parcel of land on Blanton Road in Dade City for $125,000. This site became PHCC's first location, now known as the East Campus. The physical expansion of PHSC reflects its commitment to serving a growing and diverse student population:

  • 1975: The East Campus in Dade City was officially dedicated by Florida Governor Reuben Askew.
  • 1977: The West Campus in New Port Richey was established on 140 acres of land donated by rancher Alric C.T. Pottberg.
  • 1977: The North Campus, the first location in Hernando County, was established at 98 in Brooksville.
  • 2010: The new nine-building Spring Hill Campus was established in the fall.
  • 2014: The multi-storied, urban-style Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch opened in January, enrolling more than 1,600 students, after the Porter family donated 60 acres of prime real estate in southeast Pasco County.
  • 2020: The Instructional Performing Arts Center (IPAC) was completed on the campus of Cypress Creek Middle/High School, offering new programs related to the fine arts.
  • 2026: The brand-new STEM Student Success Center is scheduled to open on the East Campus.

Presidential Leadership: Guiding PHSC Through the Years

Since its inception, PHSC has been guided by a succession of dedicated leaders who have fostered community involvement, inspired academic excellence, and developed resources.

  • Dr. Milton O. Jones: The College's founding president, Dr. Milton O. Jones, served the College for 22 years, retiring in 1994. He laid the foundation for the college's growth and established its commitment to academic excellence.
  • Dr. Robert W. Judson, Jr.: A vice president with two decades of tenure at the College, became the first African-American community college president in Florida.
  • Dr. Katherine M. Johnson: Formerly president of North Carolina's Nash Community College, Dr. Johnson was named PHSC's third president. During her administration, the College opened both the Spring Hill and Porter campuses and transitioned to a state college.
  • Dr. Timothy Beard: Formerly PHSC's vice president of student development and enrollment management, Dr. Timothy Beard became the College's fourth president on July 1, 2015, and retired on January 31, 2024, completing a nearly 17-year tenure at PHSC.
  • Jesse Pisors, Ed.D.: An extensive national search resulted in the District Board of Trustees selecting Jesse Pisors, Ed.D., as the fifth president of PHSC on February 1, 2024, to which he resigned on May 1, 2025.
