Navigating Your Penn State Student Account: A Comprehensive Guide
Penn State University's Bursar Office manages all aspects of student accounts, providing essential services related to billing, payments, and tuition. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide to understanding your student account, addressing common questions, and navigating the various processes involved.
Understanding Your Student Account Statement
Penn State issues student account statements monthly, and these statements are delivered electronically. Typically, payments are due on the 22nd of each month, although the first statement of the semester may have a different due date, so it's crucial to review your statement carefully. Charges that are not paid by the due date are subject to a late fee of 1.5% of the outstanding balance. Additionally, a financial hold will be placed on the student account, preventing enrollment in future courses and the release of your diploma upon graduation until the past-due balance is settled.
Payments made online through LionPATH (for students) or CASHNet (for Authorized Payers) are immediately reflected on the student account.
Static Nature of Monthly Statements
It's important to remember that once a student account statement is issued, it becomes static. This means that any changes, such as financial aid disbursements, will not be reflected on that particular statement.
Delinquent Balances from Previous Semesters
If you have a delinquent balance from a previous semester, you cannot use financial aid intended for a future semester to cover it. Federal regulations prohibit the use of future financial aid for prior semester balances.

Tuition and Fees
Tuition at Penn State is determined by several factors, including the student’s campus, college, major, residency status, credit load, and semester classification.
Finding Your Tuition Rate
To determine your specific tuition rate, you can utilize the University's tuition calculator. This tool allows you to input your individual circumstances and receive an accurate estimate of your tuition costs.
Costs of Attendance
Comprehensive information regarding all costs of attendance can be found on the University Budget Office’s Tuition and Fees Schedules. This resource provides a detailed breakdown of expenses associated with attending Penn State, categorized by campus location.
Penn State Tuition Information Page
For more in-depth information on Penn State tuition, including where your tuition dollars are allocated and a history of tuition rates, you can visit the Penn State Tuition Information page.
Tuition Adjustment Policy
Students who drop a course or withdraw from the University after the semester has begun should consult the Tuition Adjustment Policy. This policy outlines how tuition adjustments are calculated based on the timing of the course drop or withdrawal.

Payment Options
Penn State offers various payment options to accommodate different student preferences.
Online Payments
- eCheck: Payments made via eCheck are free of service fees and are immediately posted to the student account.
- Credit/Debit Card: Penn State accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. However, a 2.25% service fee is applied to each credit card payment to cover the costs associated with processing these transactions.
Other Payment Methods
- Paper Check or Money Order: These can be mailed to the Bursar's Office. Cash payments are not accepted at University Park.
Installment Payment Plan
Penn State offers an Installment Payment Plan, allowing students to divide their payments into manageable installments. The link to enroll in this plan becomes available after the first billing statement of the semester is issued (January for spring, May for summer, and August for fall). Note that only one payment plan is allowed per student per semester.
International Payments via Flywire
Penn State has partnered with Flywire to facilitate international payments. Flywire aims to provide competitive exchange rates and ensures secure and efficient transfer of funds. Students can initiate international payments through LionPATH. Even if you are getting a loan from an Indian bank or financial institution, you can still use Flywire to make your payment. Make sure to include the loan borrower as the sender in this case. After making your payment request, you will be provided with a disbursement or authorization letter along with the bank instructions from your Flywire dashboard. The authorization letter will demonstrate that Flywire is acting as the only and official authorized international payment processor and the end recipient of your payment is your institution.
529 Tuition Payments
To claim a 529 tuition payment (excluding Pennsylvania Guaranteed Savings Plan), print a copy of the billing statement and submit it to your 529 plan. Penn State cannot request funds from a PA 529 GSP account on behalf of the account owner.
Financial Aid
The Office of Student Aid manages the awarding and disbursement of financial aid.

Accessing Your Aid Offer
Your Aid Offer is accessible through LionPATH, where you can view your financial aid information for each semester. Any required actions will be listed on your Student Aid Checklist.
External Awards (Outside Scholarships)
The Bursar's Office processes external awards (outside scholarships) as promptly as possible in the order they are received. Due to high volume during July, August, November, and December, it may take a few weeks for the award to appear on your billing statement.
Using Federal Aid for Other Charges
With your written permission, federal Title IV financial aid funds can be used to cover other educationally related charges on your student account, such as parking permit fees, health center charges, and library fees. However, certain fees, such as late registration fees, add/drop fees, service fees, installment payment plan fees, late fees, return item fees, and stop payment fees, cannot be paid with federal aid funds, even with authorization. You retain the right to rescind your approval by contacting the Bursar's Office.
Loan-Related Holds
- Entrance Hold: This hold indicates that you need to complete a Loan Entrance Counseling Session before your loan can be disbursed.
- Verification Hold: This hold means your record has been selected for verification, and you must provide additional information to the Office of Student Aid (or the Office of Veterans Affairs) before your loan can be credited.
- Transcript Hold: This hold signifies that you previously attended another school, and you must provide a Financial Aid Transcript (FAT) from each institution before your loan can be credited.
Loan Exit Counseling
If you have a Federal Perkins/University/Primary Care student loan(s), Federal Regulations and school policy require students who are no longer enrolled, or enrolled less than half-time, complete student loan exit counseling. Through this exit counseling, you will be informed of your rights and responsibilities regarding your student loans. Paper exit counseling packets are available upon request.
DCTAG (District of Columbia Tuition Assistance Grant)
DCTAG is designed to help eligible District of Columbia residents afford higher education by offsetting the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition and fees. However, it does not change a student’s residency classification for tuition purposes. Students paying in-state tuition are not eligible for DCTAG.
Other Charges on Your Student Account
Greek Membership Fee
The Greek Membership Fee supports the University's Greek-letter community. The fee is $90 per semester for IFC or Panhellenic chapter members and $30 per semester for Multicultural Greek Council or National Pan-Hellenic Council members. The fee appears on the account statement each semester the student maintains membership in a Greek organization.
SHIP (Student Health Insurance Premium)
International students and students in the College of Medicine are required to have adequate health insurance coverage while enrolled at Penn State.
University Health Services (UHS) Charge
University Health Services (UHS) bills patients' insurance companies. If UHS is in-network with your plan, UHS will accept what your insurance company pays and only charge you for co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles. You may be liable for the portion of the bill not covered by your insurance. The date of the charge on the student account may differ from the date the service was received, as it reflects when the UHS charge posted after the billing process. The Office of the Bursar does not have specific details about student health service charges due to student record confidentiality.
Bookstore Purchases
Registered Penn State students can charge bookstore purchases made at a PSU bookstore or online to their student account. However, purchases made at MBS Direct/Barnes and Noble must be paid at the point of sale.
