A Legacy of Education: From Trade Schools to a Unified District
The origins of the Peralta Community College District can be traced back to the early 20th century with the establishment of the Central Trade School (later known as the Joseph C. Laney Trade and Technical Institute) in 1927 and the Merritt School of Business in 1929. These institutions, initially operated by the Oakland Unified School District (then called the Oakland Board of Education), laid the foundation for what would become a comprehensive community college system.
In 1953, the school district took a significant step forward by founding Oakland Junior College. The Laney campus served as the vocational training center, while the Merritt campus hosted the liberal arts and business programs. This marked the beginning of a more structured approach to higher education within the community.
The pivotal moment arrived in 1963 when residents of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Piedmont voted to form a unified community college district. This decision paved the way for the creation of the Peralta Community College District, which officially began operations on July 1, 1964. With the founding of Peralta Community College District, the campuses of Oakland City College were split into their own community colleges, Laney College and Merritt College.
A bond issue passed in 1965 further solidified the district's commitment to growth and development. The bond established a new downtown Oakland campus building for Laney College (opened in 1970), a new campus for Merritt College (opened in 1971), and the founding of the College of Alameda.

At the same time, the service centers also provide guidance, support, and leadership to the colleges in administrative and compliance areas.
