Unveiling Merit Scholarship Opportunities for IB Students at WPI
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) offers numerous merit-based scholarship opportunities for both first-year and transfer students. These scholarships recognize academic excellence, leadership, and involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. Unlike some institutions, WPI automatically considers applicants for these awards, simplifying the process for prospective students. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the various merit scholarships available at WPI, particularly those relevant to International Baccalaureate (IB) students.
Automatic Consideration for Merit-Based Scholarships
WPI streamlines the scholarship application process by automatically considering both first-year and transfer applicants for merit-based awards. This eliminates the need for separate scholarship applications, except for specific programs like the WPI FIRST and VEX Robotics Scholarships. This automatic consideration ensures that all eligible students are reviewed for potential merit-based aid.
Merit Scholarships for First-Year Students
First-year applicants are evaluated for merit scholarships based on a holistic review of their credentials, including:
- Academic Performance in High School: Strong grades and challenging coursework, especially in STEM fields, are key factors.
- Recommendations: Letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors provide insights into a student's academic abilities, work ethic, and character.
- Leadership: Demonstrated leadership in school clubs, organizations, or community initiatives is highly valued.
- Extracurricular Involvement: Participation in a variety of extracurricular activities showcases a student's interests, passions, and ability to manage time effectively.
- Community Service: Engagement in community service demonstrates a commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
National Consortium of Specialized STEM Schools (NCSSS) Scholarship
All first-year applicants to WPI are considered for a National Consortium of Specialized STEM Schools (NCSSS) scholarship from a participating school. Selections are made on a rolling basis from January to April and are based on academic performance, program of study, recommendations, and personal statement. This scholarship specifically targets students with a strong interest and aptitude for STEM fields.
Regional Scholarships
WPI’s reach expands well beyond New England and into other regions of the country. To honor our growing alumni base and connections with industry and community partners in these regions, WPI will offer a limited number of Regional Scholarships to incoming first year students. These scholarships are intended to recognize and support students from specific geographic areas.

FIRST, VEX, and REC Foundation Robotics Scholarships
WPI has a long-standing commitment to supporting robotics education and is proud to have been the inaugural university to offer a FIRST scholarship starting in 1996. Students interested in the FIRST, VEX or REC Foundation scholarships do not need to apply as a robotics engineering major in order to be considered. These scholarships encourage participation and excellence in robotics competitions.
Merit Scholarships for Transfer Students
Transfer students are also eligible for merit-based scholarships at WPI. All admitted transfer candidates are automatically evaluated for a WPI Presidential Scholarship specifically for transfers based on college level academic performance, as well as professional and learning pursuits, leadership experiences, and extracurricular involvements. This scholarship recognizes the achievements and potential of transfer students.
WPI Transfer Partner Student Scholarship
New for fall 2025 enrollment, transfer students admitted from one of our partner institutions are guaranteed the WPI Transfer Partner Student Scholarship valued at a minimum of $20,000 each year, for up to four years. All accepted transfer students from partner institutions will automatically be awarded-no additional application or materials necessary. Candidates must have submitted their completed application by the transfer application deadline. This scholarship provides significant financial support to transfer students from partner institutions.
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholarship
WPI awards all Phi Theta Kappa Scholars a $10,000 scholarship per year on top of any academic merit scholarships they’ve been awarded. All accepted PTK scholars will automatically be awarded-no additional application or materials are necessary. Part-time students and students with previous baccalaureate degrees are not eligible. This scholarship recognizes the academic achievements of PTK members.
