The Disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki: A Person of Interest and Ongoing Investigation
The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student, during her spring break trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has sparked an extensive search and investigation. Konanki, a legal permanent resident of the United States and an Indian citizen, went missing on March 6th, prompting involvement from local authorities, the FBI, and other U.S. agencies. As the search continues, a "person of interest" has been identified, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
The Initial Disappearance
Sudiksha Konanki was last seen on the morning of March 6th at a beach near the Riu República Hotel in Punta Cana, where she was staying with five friends. According to the Dominican Republic's national police force, Konanki and her friends entered a beach area near a Riu hotel around 4:15 am on Thursday. While her friends returned later, Konanki and a young man remained behind. This was the last confirmed sighting of Konanki.
Identification of a Person of Interest
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Virginia identified 24-year-old Joshua Riibe as a person of interest in connection to Konanki's disappearance. Riibe, a U.S. citizen who was also vacationing in Punta Cana, is believed to be the last person to have seen Konanki. The sheriff's office has stressed that Riibe is not considered a suspect and that this is not a criminal investigation at this time.
Thomas Julia, spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, clarified that a person of interest "is not the same thing as a suspect as this is not a criminal matter," emphasizing that Riibe's designation stems from the fact that he may have been the last one to see Konanki.
Riibe's Account and Investigation
Riibe has been interviewed extensively by authorities, and his passport has been confiscated by Dominican authorities. While he is reportedly cooperating with the investigation, there have been reports of inconsistencies in his accounts of what happened.

According to a transcript obtained by ABC News, Riibe told prosecutors that he and Konanki met the night before she vanished. He claimed they were swimming in the ocean and were caught in a large wave and strong current. Riibe stated that they both struggled to breathe, and he attempted to save her.
Riibe recounted, "I was holding her under my arm and swimming. It was hard. I was a pool lifeguard, not the ocean." He further stated that after finally reaching the sand, he "put her in front of me. Then she got up to go get her stuff since the ocean had moved us."
He added, "She was not out of the water since it was up to her knee. She was walking at an angle in the water. I asked her if she was OK. I didn't hear a response because I began to vomit with all the water I had swallowed."
Riibe claims that after vomiting, he looked around and could not find Konanki. He told authorities he passed out on the beach and assumed Konanki had returned to the hotel. Hotel cameras captured him returning to his room in the morning.
Another account obtained by NBC News indicates that Riibe told Dominican Republic investigators in a March 12 interview that he and his friend met Konanki and her friends after returning to the Riu República Resort from a party. He stated that they "all went to the bar" and then a "big wave" swept them into the current. As a certified lifeguard, Riibe said he "grabbed" Konanki and "held her" under his arm as he tried to swim back to shore. He said he "kept trying to get her to breathe" as he pulled them back to the beach but struggled to catch his breath simultaneously. "I swallowed a lot of water," he shared. "I could have lost consciousness several times. When I finally reached the ground on the beach, I pulled her in front of me. She wasn't out of the water, as it was up to our knees. She was walking at an angle in the water. The last time I saw her, I asked if she was OK. I felt really bad and tired," he recalled. "I laid down on a beach chair and fell asleep because I couldn't go far. Then I woke up because of the sun and mosquito bites.

Search Efforts and Authorities Involved
A comprehensive search for Konanki has been underway since her disappearance, involving Dominican authorities, the FBI, the U.S. State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The search has included land, air, and water efforts, utilizing drones, helicopters, divers, boats, and canines.
The Riu Hotels have also been coordinating with authorities on the investigation.
Family's Plea and Presumption of Drowning
More than 10 days after her disappearance, Konanki's parents sent a letter to police in the Dominican Republic, asking them to legally declare their daughter dead. Sheriff Mike Chapman wrote in a statement, “Sudiksha’s family has expressed their belief that she drowned.” The Dominican Republic Civil Defense authorities are also operating under the assumption that Konanki may have drowned based on the information they received. However, Sheriff Chapman has emphasized that there is still no concrete evidence to support this theory.
Konanki’s parents, Subbarayudu and Sreedevi Konanki, have urged authorities to widen their investigation into her disappearance. They shared that her belongings, including a phone and wallet, were left with her friends, but she’s known to always carry her phone.
Interpol's Involvement
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office has requested that Interpol issue a yellow notice, which is an international alert for missing persons. This allows countries to exchange information about Konanki and flags her identity with border officials.
