Phi Mu Foundation: Empowering Academic Excellence Through Scholarships

Since its establishment as a literary society over 160 years ago, Phi Mu has been dedicated to the academic and personal growth of its members. Recognizing that the success of collegiate chapters hinges on the success of individual members, Phi Mu places academic excellence at the forefront of the collegiate experience. The Phi Mu Foundation Scholarship Program stands as a testament to this commitment, providing financial assistance and support to members pursuing their educational goals.

Academic Success: A Core Value

Phi Mu's commitment to academic success is evident in various aspects of the organization. Each collegiate chapter is expected to maintain a combined GPA of 2.75 or the All-Women’s Average, whichever is higher, to remain in good standing and hold leadership positions. To support members in their academic endeavors, each chapter has an Academic Excellence Chairwoman and a Chapter Academic Excellence Adviser, who provide guidance and resources.

GPA Requirements and Support Systems

Each chapter establishes its own GPA standard, reflecting the norms and expectations of their specific campus. New members are expected to be in good standing with their college or university and chapter to be initiated. To remain in good standing, members must maintain a designated GPA, as outlined in the chapter bylaws. Chapter officers are also required to maintain a specific GPA to hold leadership positions.

Members who fall below the chapter's term GPA requirement may be referred to the honor process, Phi Mu's accountability system. This process involves developing customized improvement plans to help members achieve their academic goals.

Academic Excellence Support at All Levels

The Academic Excellence Chairwoman in each collegiate chapter plays a crucial role in assisting sisters with their academic performance. She implements an annual program designed to foster and promote high scholarship. Working with the Vice President, she creates chapter programming based on the learning styles of chapter members and supports the Honor Committee in designing appropriate programs for members who are not in good standing. These programs are tailored to meet the individual needs of members and help them achieve academic success.

Phi Mu also has a National Academic Excellence Chairwoman and Committee, comprised of experienced alumnae volunteers who support chapters in achieving and maintaining academic excellence. Additionally, the chapter's local and area team of volunteers and Collegiate Chapter Specialist review each chapter's annual academic plan and provide officer training and resources for the Academic Excellence Chairwoman to use with her chapter and individual members.

Phi Mu Foundation Scholarship Program: Investing in the Future

The Phi Mu Foundation is committed to supporting the academic development of its members through its robust scholarship program. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year alone, the Foundation awarded 164 undergraduate and graduate scholarships, totaling $194,000. These scholarships are primarily unrestricted, providing recipients with the flexibility to use the funds for various educational expenses. However, some scholarships are designated for specific chapters, fields of study, states of residence, or colleges.

Eligibility and Application

The minimum requirement for all Phi Mu scholarships is a 3.0 grade point average, and all Phi Mu members who meet this requirement are eligible to apply. The Foundation offers both merit-based and need-based scholarships. Applicants are evaluated based on several factors, including academic performance, involvement in Phi Mu, campus, and community activities, financial need, personal statements, and recommendations.

The scholarship application process involves submitting an application form, transcripts, and recommendations. Unofficial transcripts can be uploaded during the application process, but official copies are required if selected for a scholarship. Applicants are required to submit two recommendations from professional or academic sources who can attest to their overall character and/or need for a scholarship.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Phi Mu Foundation offers a wide array of scholarship opportunities to support members at various stages of their academic journeys. These scholarships cater to diverse fields of study, interests, and financial needs.
