Navigating the myPHSC Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) provides a wealth of resources and services to its students, all accessible through the myPHSC student portal. This guide offers a detailed overview of how to effectively utilize the portal for registration, accessing academic resources, and staying connected with campus life.

Accessing the myPHSC Portal

The myPHSC Bobcat Portal serves as the central hub for students to manage their academic journey. To access the portal, students need their PHSC login credentials.

Registration: A Step-by-Step Guide

Registering for classes is a crucial step in a student's academic career. The myPHSC portal streamlines this process. Here's a detailed walkthrough:

  1. Login to myPHSC Bobcat Portal: Use your PHSC credentials to access the portal.
  2. Find Banner Student Self Service Card: Locate this card within the portal interface.
  3. Choose Student Dashboard: This dashboard provides an overview of your student information and registration options.
  4. Choose Registration: Select the registration option to begin the process.
  5. Prepare for Registration: Before registering for classes, click "Prepare for Registration" to review and complete any pre-registration requirements.
  6. Register for Classes: Select the appropriate registration term and search for desired courses. Add courses to your schedule.

For additional assistance, students can watch the "How to Register for Classes in Banner" video, which provides detailed visual instructions.

Important Registration Notes

  • New Students: Students attending PHSC for the first time must attend a New Student Group Advising session. These sessions teach students how to register for classes and should be scheduled as early as possible. After the session, students can make changes to their schedules until the first day of classes.
  • Continuing Students: Students already enrolled at PHSC can review their individual degree audits to select courses that meet their program requirements. They can then register for courses using the myPHSC online registration system.
  • Late Registration: Registration for on-campus courses is not allowed after the first class meets.
  • Fees Due: For students registering on January 7 or thereafter, fees are due on the day of registration.

Assistance with Registration

Students experiencing difficulties with course registration should consult with an Academic Advisor for personalized assistance. During non-registration periods, advisors offer guidance on education plans, transfer goals, resource needs, and career advice.

Post-Registration Essentials

After successfully registering for classes, several important steps remain:

  • Canvas Access: Log in to Canvas to view your courses once the semester begins.
  • Textbooks: Purchase or rent required textbooks. Students are automatically enrolled in the Bobcat Instant Access program for digital textbooks but must opt-out each semester to avoid charges if they prefer other options.
  • Syllabi: Carefully read the syllabi for each course, noting important deadlines and requirements.

Residency for Tuition Purposes

Understanding residency requirements is crucial for determining tuition costs.

  • Definition of Resident: A resident for tuition purposes is someone who has maintained legal residence in Florida and has established two legal ties to the state for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the first day of classes for which Florida residency is sought (s. 1009.26, Florida Statute).
  • Proof of Residency: First-time students and returning students who have not attended within the last 12 months must submit two proofs of residency. Students who attended PHSC within the last twelve (12) months and are classified as a non-Florida resident (currently paying out-of-state tuition) and wish to be reclassified as a resident for tuition purposes, must provide a minimum of three (3) documents proving residency and provide a completed Residency Classification Form prior to the first day of classes of the term for which Florida residency is sought (s. 1009.26, Florida Statute).

Library Resources and Services

PHSC Libraries offer a wide array of resources and services to support student learning and research.

Accessing Library Resources

  • Library Card: Initial library cards are provided at no cost.
  • Library Catalog: The Library Catalog serves as the gateway to library materials at PHSC and Florida's public colleges and universities. Enter your search terms in the search field. To limit your search to books and physical materials, search by "Books and More." To log into the library resources, click on Electronic Library Resources link in your course, and then you should be auto signed in to everything when you click sign in from Primo. Note: when searching the Library Catalog (Primo VE) you will need to sign in- click the sign in link in the upper right and click on the option labeled "Single Sign On - login with your PHSC Portal Login". If you are already "logged in" it will usually auto connect you.
  • Electronic Databases: PHSC libraries also provide access to electronic databases containing full-text journal articles, newspapers, and electronic books. You will see a link to the A to Z list of library databases at the top of the page above the search box.
  • Ask-a-Librarian: This online chat reference service provides live research help and general information assistance across the State of Florida. The service is available late at night and on weekends. Even if a Patron is connected to a Librarian who is not based at PHSC, the Librarian still has access to all of the PHSC Library's research resources.

Available Materials

  • Circulating Materials: Circulating materials can be checked out for a three-week period by faculty, staff, and currently registered students with a valid PHSC library card. Items may be renewed two times for a total of nine weeks.
  • Course Reserve Material: Course reserve materials, including textbooks, anatomy models, calculators, and chemistry model sets, are available for in-library use.
  • Reference Books and Periodicals: Reference books and periodicals cannot be checked out.

Additional Services

  • Interlibrary Loan: Books and articles not available in the library collections of PHSC may be requested through interlibrary loan. There is no charge for this service unless a fee is assessed by the lending institution. Intercampus loans can be made using the PHSC library catalog.
  • Photocopiers and Printers: The library provides black and white photocopiers and networked printers. The charge is 10¢ per page. Students can use their PHSC ID cards, and a machine is available to add money to the card. Pay-for-Print cards can be purchased for $1.00 (including 50¢ credit).
  • Computers and Scanning: Computers are available for use within the library. Scanning services are available at all libraries using the Kic Scanner, which can scan to various file formats, including PDF, DOC, JPEG, and MP3, and can also send faxes.
  • Information Literacy Module (ILM): The Information Literacy Module (ILM) will introduce several key concepts which will aid in academic research and personal information seeking. This guide is designed as an open "textbook" to help with the Information Literacy content in Comp I, ENC1101 courses. You can use this guide to review before answering the Information Literacy Final questions, as well as referring to it as you work on the final questions. You have full access to all of the Information Literacy Content to help you at any time. You may use this content at any networked computer on or off campus. It is open to all students and the 6 modules are designed to be completed in sequential order. If you are working on the Information Literacy in ENC1101, your course might link to various parts of this Information Literacy Guide as that material comes up in the Comp I course. There are self check quizzes you can do for each section and many of those questions (or similar ones) will appear in the Information Literacy Final questions in your Comp I course. If you are going through all the ILM content, please allow yourself a week minimum to go through all of the modules for a complete review. Read the objectives for the module to understand the essential elements you should learn. Read through the instructional content of the module. If you have any questions at any point, please contact your campus library and we will be happy to help you out.
  • Overdue Fines: PHSC does not charge overdue fines. However, students who do not return library material will have holds placed on their record.
