Pinkerton Academy, situated in Derry, New Hampshire, stands as the largest independent high school in the United States, serving approximately 3,100 students. Pinkerton Academy operates as a private, non-profit corporation. Its primary funding source is public tuition, derived from contracts with surrounding school districts. The academy serves as the high school of record for the towns of Auburn, Candia, Chester, Derry, Hampstead, and Hooksett in New Hampshire. Additionally, Pinkerton accepts students from other local communities (both in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, totaling over 20 towns) on a privately-tuitioned basis.

The school is governed by a Head of School, who reports to an eighteen-member Board of Trustees. These board members are elected for life and serve without pay, with each sending town having representation on the Board, as stipulated by contract.

A Unique Campus Setting

Since the opening of the Old Academy Building in 1815, Pinkerton Academy's campus has expanded significantly. Major building projects have marked periods of growth, including Pinkerton Hall, the Shepard Building, the Saltmarsh Library, the Low Building, the Field House, the Ek Science Building, the Spaulding Arts & Humanities Building (housing the Robert Frost English Center and the 890-seat Stockbridge Theatre), and the Academy Building.

The Academy has also invested in buildings to accommodate its Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which offer nineteen distinct career pathways, some with national certifications. The recent Social Studies Center construction replaced the old Social Studies Wing with a modern facility for special education and social studies classes.

Pinkerton Academy owns over 170 acres of land. On the main campus, fourteen of the school's twenty-two buildings are dedicated to academics. Administrative functions are primarily housed in Stearns House, the Old Academy Building, and Mackenzie House. The Saltmarsh Library serves as the school's library, while the Old Academy Building also houses the Abbott Gallery and the Office of Alumni Affairs. Across North Main Street, 95 acres are dedicated to athletic fields. Additionally, the school owns a 68-acre parcel in Chester, NH, known as the Forsaith Forest. This Atlantic White Cedar swamp, donated by former trustee Dr. Forsaith, is maintained by students in the Environmental Studies and Forestry classes and contains unique species like pitcher plants and black gum trees.

Pinkerton Academy emphasizes a traditional educational approach combined with innovative pedagogy and technology. With over 320 unique courses, the program of study is supported by comprehensive pupil support services, career and college counseling, health services, a library, special education, and advanced technology.

Beyond academics, Pinkerton offers over 60 co- and extra-curricular activities, including all NHIAA sports (except XC skiing). The Academy promotes mutual cooperation among students, parents, staff, and trustees.

Tuition and Application Information

Domestic students residing outside the contracting towns must complete an application and pay the tuition rate set for the school year. While applications are accepted on a rolling basis, submitting materials by December 1st is encouraged, especially for freshmen, to facilitate integration into the community. The regular education tuition rate for the 2026-2027 school year will be available by early December. The yearly tuition is $25,000.

Transfer Student Support

The Transfer Student Group, consisting of school counselors, student mentors, and transfer students, helps new students adjust to Pinkerton. The group meets regularly, and student mentors act as campus guides. Transfer students interested in joining the program can inquire during registration.
