Navigating Education: Understanding the Pleasantville Board of Education
The Pleasantville Board of Education plays a vital role in shaping the educational landscape for the children of the district. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the board, its structure, function, and how the community can engage with it.
The Role of the Board of Education
The Board of Education is the official policy-making body of the School District. It is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring a meaningful educational experience for all students, preparing them to be caring and responsible citizens. The Pleasantville Board of Education invites you to attend its meetings and participate in the educational affairs of our District. We value your input as we strive to provide our children with a meaningful educational experience and to prepare them to be caring and responsible citizens.
Structure and Composition
Your Board consists of five members: residents elected at large by District voters to three-year unpaid terms of office. In Iowa, school board members are elected to serve four-year terms. School Board members are unpaid elected officials. These individuals are elected by the community to represent their interests and make decisions that benefit the students and the district as a whole. The first meeting in July is the annual organizational meeting, at which time the Board elects its President and Vice-President.
Meeting Schedule and Format
The board typically meets for regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:00 pm in the PHS library. Meeting dates and times are subject to change as needed. Unless otherwise posted, meetings are held in public for the audience to observe. An executive session may be held before, during or after a public meeting to discuss matters involving personnel, litigation, negotiations, or other matters as allowed under the Open Meetings Law. Attendance at these sessions is limited to Board members and any other person whose presence the Board deems necessary for the discussion. All official business, however, is enacted in public session.
Each meeting provides one opportunity when District residents may comment to the Board. This is called "Recognition of the Audience." Those who wish to address the Board are requested to come to the podium and state their name and address for the record. Others may be invited to sit with the Board while making a presentation, providing information or during a work session.
