A Legacy of Excellence: From Hindoo College to Presidency University
Established in 1817 as the Hindoo College, Presidency University has a long and storied past. The creation of the Supreme Court of Calcutta in 1773 sparked a growing interest in the English language among the Hindus of Bengal. David Hare and Raja Radhakanta Deb took preliminary steps to introduce English language education in Bengal. Babu Buddinath Mukherjee, with the support of Sir Edward Hyde East, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Fort William, further advanced this cause. A meeting of 'European and Hindu Gentlemen' was convened in May 1816 to discuss the establishment of an institution that would provide a liberal education to the children of the Hindu Community. The proposal was met with enthusiasm, and a donation of over Rs. 100,000 was pledged to establish the new college. Key donors included Raja Gopi Mohun Deb of Shovabazar Raj, Maharaja Tej Chandra of Bardhaman Raj, Raja Gopi Mohan Tagore of Pathuriaghata, Babu Joy Krishna Singha of Jorasanko, and Babu Ganga Narayan Das. Raja Ram Mohan Roy supported the initiative but chose not to publicly endorse it to avoid alienating his orthodox countrymen. Initially, classes were held at Gorachand Bysack's house, located at Garanhatta (later renamed 304, Chitpore Road), which was rented by the college. In 1855, it was renamed Presidency College and became a leading constituent college under the University of Calcutta.
Presidency College officially became Presidency University after the West Bengal government passed the Presidency University Bill in 2009. The then Governor of West Bengal, M. K. Narayanan, gave his assent to the bill on July 7, 2010. The government published the gazette notification on July 23, 2010, completing all legal formalities for the college to become a full university. Amiya Bagchi was tasked with chairing the committee responsible for selecting and appointing the university's first vice-chancellor. In 2011, Higher Education Minister Bratya Basu proposed the formation of a mentor group, similar to the Nalanda mentor group, to oversee the university's operations. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, announced the formation of a committee in June 2011, with Amartya Sen as its chief mentor and Harvard-based Sugata Bose as its chairman, to oversee the running of the college and appoint officials and faculty members. The committee also includes 2019 Economics Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Banerjee, Ashoke Sen, Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, Nayanjot Lahiri, Himadri Pakrashi, Rahul Mukerjee, Isher Judge Ahluwalia, and Swapan Kumar Chakravorty.
