These internships offer emerging journalists practical experience, skill development, and a foundation for a potential career in the field.

Staff at Bay City News are provided with training at every step of their careers, from intern to junior reporter to senior editor. Staff and interns have been trained on Office 365, data analysis and visualizations through Power BI, geotagging and mapping, research techniques, diversity, equity and inclusion, and solutions journalism. We are adding an AI component to our training in 2025. Additional training priorities include the “how to” basics that form a strong professional foundation for journalists: avoiding libel and slander, writing a good headline, conducting interviews and dealing with hostile sources, working in a professional environment with an editor, and building organizational and personal brands.

California Press Foundation Internship Grants

The California Press Foundation’s Internship Grants program offers financial support to college students pursuing newsroom internships at California news companies. The program provides up to four $2,500 grants to college students who obtain newsroom internships at California news companies in Spring or Summer. Cal Press also earmarks one $2,500 grant for a most-worthy advertising or marketing intern. Cal Press provides grants to select students who demonstrate an exceptional interest in pursuing careers in the news business in California. The students must seek and secure the internship on their own at news companies that belong to CNPA. Internships, which can occur in spring or summer, must be full time and last at least six weeks.

Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) Scholarships and Grants

AAJA offers scholarships and grants worth more than $20,000 every year. These opportunities have different deadlines and criteria, so please read the individual descriptions carefully. AAJA members may access other internships, fellowships, scholarships, grants through our Career Center, in partnership with Journalism Next. Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) Internship

FIRE’s 10-week, paid summer internship offers undergraduate students a hands-on opportunity to defend civil liberties on campuses nationwide. As part of our broader mission to educate and empower the next generation of First Amendment advocates, interns gain real-world experience, individualized mentorship, and the chance to contribute meaningfully to FIRE’s work protecting student rights. FIRE interns do substantive work and participate in weekly seminars with FIRE staff and other experts on freedom of expression, due process, and much more. Interns will work at FIRE’s downtown Philadelphia office.

Qualifications and Responsibilities: FIRE is seeking passionate, team-oriented, and driven undergraduates (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) attending colleges and universities in the United States who are looking to engage in free speech activism on campus. Ideal candidates are responsible, focused, and organized; have a passion for civil liberties; and have a history of taking action in support of causes they believe in. Bay City News Internship Program

Each year, we offer paid college-level internships, hands-on newsroom experience and one-on-one mentorship to up to 10 aspiring journalists. As a capstone to their summer, each intern produces an in-depth project or story tackling critical issues in the 13 counties we cover from Mendocino to Monterey. The work from our 2025 cohort helped bring attention to AIDS funding at risk, inequity in access to nature, young artists fighting for the arts in San Francisco and more.
