Progresso Learning Academy: Fostering Growth and Mastery in Education

Progresso Learning Academy is a Houston-based educational institution dedicated to providing comprehensive learning programs for students of all ages. Understanding the multifaceted challenges in education, Progresso Learning Academy strives to create an environment where students can thrive academically and develop essential skills for future success. This overview explores the academy's approach to addressing various aspects of student learning, from personalized instruction to digital fluency.

Addressing Student Disengagement

Student disengagement often begins subtly. A student may gradually withdraw, ceasing to participate actively in class, submitting assignments late, and losing confidence in their learning abilities. Identifying and addressing this disengagement is a key challenge for educators. Progresso Learning Academy recognizes that combating disengagement requires more than just recognizing the signs. It involves creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that reignites students' passion for education.

The Significance of End-of-Course Exams

End-of-Course (EOC) exams are high-stakes assessments that impact students, teachers, and schools. In many states, EOC results contribute to accountability ratings and can significantly influence a student's final grade. Given the pressure associated with these exams, preparation is crucial. However, effective preparation goes beyond mere practice. It requires a strategic approach that ensures students are not only familiar with the content but also confident in their ability to apply their knowledge.

Accelerated Instruction: Catching Up Effectively

Accelerated instruction is a method designed to help students who are behind catch up to grade-level expectations efficiently. It is important to note that the term “accelerated instruction” can sound counterintuitive. However, it's not about rushing through the curriculum. Instead, it focuses on targeted interventions and support to bridge learning gaps and promote deeper understanding. This approach allows students to grasp fundamental concepts and build a solid foundation for future learning.

Visible Learning: Identifying What Works

In education, the central question revolves around identifying effective strategies to enhance student learning. Visible Learning, a comprehensive research synthesis by Professor John Hattie, seeks to answer this question. By analyzing numerous studies, Visible Learning identifies instructional practices and interventions that have the most significant impact on student achievement. Progresso Learning Academy likely integrates these evidence-based strategies to optimize its learning programs and ensure that students receive the most effective instruction.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Creating a supportive school environment that fosters both learning and positive behavior is a complex task. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) offers a structured framework to manage this challenge effectively. PBIS focuses on creating a positive school culture, teaching appropriate behaviors, and providing targeted support for students who struggle. By implementing PBIS, schools can reduce behavioral issues, improve student engagement, and create a more conducive learning environment.

Bridging the Digital Fluency Gap

As digital testing becomes increasingly prevalent, a new type of learning gap is emerging-one based on digital fluency. Students are now required to demonstrate their understanding of state standards through online assessments. This shift necessitates that educators address not only academic knowledge but also students' ability to navigate and utilize digital tools effectively. Progresso Learning Academy likely incorporates digital literacy training to ensure that all students can confidently participate in online assessments and leverage technology for learning.

Data-Driven Instruction and Collaboration

"Data wise, the teachers use Progress Learning during collaboration." Data plays a crucial role in informing instructional decisions and monitoring student progress. Teachers use data to identify areas where students are excelling and areas where they need additional support. Collaboration among teachers is also essential for sharing best practices and developing effective strategies to address student needs. By fostering a data-driven and collaborative environment, Progresso Learning Academy can continuously improve its instructional practices and tailor its approach to meet the unique needs of each student.

Progresso Learning Center: A Fresh Start for Adults

The Progressive Learning Center, developed to create a learning environment for adults trying to make a fresh start or develop new skills, was started in the home of the founder, located in a rural community. The learning center is approved and regulated by the Texas Workforce Commission, Career Schools and Colleges Section, Austin, Texas. This initiative highlights the academy's commitment to lifelong learning and providing opportunities for individuals to enhance their skills and pursue new career paths.

The nurse aide training program is governed by the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). The training curriculum is adhered to with little to no deviation. The learning center is large enough to seat 15 students comfortably and the training lab is equipped appropriately conducive to preparation for clinical training. Clinical training will occur at an area skill nursing facility that is approved by DADS. In 2012 PLC added to its program a medication administration course and in the Spring of 2013 a pharmacy technician program was added.
