Melissa Jacobsen, a student of industrial organizational psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology, shared her experience with SAFE Project. Introduced to the organization through her mentor, Brian Vanderheyden, she initially worked on a virtual 5K project. Currently, she contributes to the SAFE Campuses and SAFE Workplaces portfolios as a research and development intern, focusing on creating a platform for those transitioning out of university and into the workplace. This initiative aims to bridge the gap during that transition period, ensuring individuals are not left without support.

One of the projects Melissa is assisting on is a wellness program for organizations to utilize when they believe an employee may be suffering from or using substances at the workplace. SAFE Project aims to create a comprehensive guide of what to look for in an organization, even if it is not explicitly labeled as "recovery friendly." This includes identifying "green flags" such as an open company culture and considering the industry a person might want to pursue.

Melissa highlighted the stigma surrounding addiction and the need for progress in harm reduction. While there is discussion and promotion of harm reduction, there is a lack of initiatives and programs that translate these ideas into real-world change.

Employment Opportunities

- Shelter Advocate: Part-time positions are available for Night & Weekend Advocates to answer the emergency hotline and provide onsite emotional support to survivors of domestic violence living in an emergency shelter.
- Legal Advocate: The Rural Legal Advocate provides trauma-informed legal advocacy and direct support services to survivors of domestic violence in Project Safe’s rural and outer-county service areas.
Internship Opportunities
Project Safe offers internships for those seeking to learn more about direct service social work, nonprofit administration, digital marketing, and more. Internship opportunities may include:
- Direct Services: Interns work directly with clients and gain experience in client advocacy and case management.
- Direct Service - Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe: Similar to the Direct Services internship, but with a focus on rural outreach settings.
- Breaking Silence: Interns present vital information on the dynamics of dating violence to teens and young adults.
- Breaking Silence Social Media: Interns work within the Breaking Silence team to offer new ideas around working with you, communications, marketing, or PR majors who are knowledgeable around social media trends
- Fatality Review: Interns examine closed domestic violence fatality cases and implement recommendations for change to prevent future fatalities.
- Administrative: Interns work with an experienced Executive Director on fundraising, public relations, and grant proposals.
- Thrift Store: Interns work closely with the store manager, staff, and volunteers in improving the productivity and profit of the store.
- Digital Media: Interns work with the Community Involvement and Volunteer Coordinator on designing social media campaigns and crafting public relations content.
Breaking Silence: Empowering Teens to Recognize and Avoid Unhealthy Relationships
Breaking Silence is a Project Safe initiative that helps teens recognize and avoid unhealthy relationships by encouraging them to speak out and get help when needed.
Breaking Silence Textline
The Breaking Silence Textline provides support, information & referral sources, and counseling or outreach assistance. It is operated by Project Safe’s trained interns and overseen by two Textline Managers. The Textline has been able to provide confidential support, information & referral to teens throughout the state of Georgia. It’s confidential and available 24/7!

Breaking Silence Services
The Breaking Silence team also offers presentations to groups of young people focusing on domestic violence prevention, healthy relationships, and healthy communication.

Safe Kids Worldwide is a nonprofit organization working to prevent childhood injury.
Executive Internship
The Executive internship is a hands-on experience with the opportunity to work alongside a passionate team in a fast-paced, nonprofit setting. The intern will work closely alongside the Executive Team supporting projects including fundraising, strategic planning, conference planning, social media, creative content development and other initiatives that support the mission of Safe Kids.

- Understand the role of an Executive Office within a nonprofit organization
- Be innovative and share new and creative ideas while working alongside the organization’s President and other Executive team members
