Purdue University Study Abroad Programs: A World of Opportunities

Purdue University offers a diverse range of study abroad programs designed to enhance students' global competency and provide them with invaluable international experiences. These programs cater to various academic interests and offer opportunities for cultural immersion, academic growth, and career development.

The Global Engineering Alliance for Research and Education (GEARE) Program

The Global Engineering Alliance for Research and Education (GEARE) Program stands out as Purdue University's premier international work experience program specifically tailored for engineering students. Recognizing the increasing importance of global skills in the STEM workforce, GEARE aims to equip undergraduate students with the necessary competencies through a semester of study abroad and an international work experience. This unique program not only provides students with a great study abroad experience but also enables them to gain critical skills that will be beneficial in their future careers.

Key Features of GEARE

  • International Work Experience: A core component of the GEARE program is the opportunity for students to participate in an international work experience, allowing them to apply their engineering knowledge in a global context.
  • Study Abroad Semester: Students also spend a semester studying abroad, immersing themselves in a different culture and broadening their academic perspectives.
  • Global Skills Competency: The program is designed to enhance students' global skills competency, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of a globalized workforce.

CIEE Co-Sponsored Programs

Purdue University has partnered with CIEE: Council on International Education Exchange, to offer co-sponsored programs during the academic year. As part of this collaboration, students pay program fees directly to CIEE and a Purdue study abroad fee to the bursar. Purdue Main Campus students, whether residents or non-residents, pay a comprehensive program fee that usually includes tuition, housing, meals, international health insurance, and a few excursions. Financial aid can be applied to these program costs, and credits and grades are directly transferred to the students' Purdue transcripts. Additionally, students may apply for CIEE and Purdue scholarships and grants.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

CIEE and Purdue offer scholarships and grants for study abroad programs to students with demonstrated financial need, proven academic merit, and for specific CIEE programs. Purdue students are eligible to receive funding to support a study abroad experience.

  • Need-Based Scholarships: These scholarships are based on students' Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and enrolled institution. Students can complete the Scholarships & Grants portion of their program application to be considered for all awards to which they are eligible.
  • Merit Scholarships: These scholarships are based on academic achievement.

Program in Buenos Aires, Argentina

For Engineering majors, Buenos Aires offers an ideal setting to learn how to apply engineering solutions in a global context. Students can choose from courses available at the CEA CAPA Buenos Aires Center or at the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires (ITBA), which is regarded as one of the best engineering schools in Latin America. The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program.
