Pusan National University: A Legacy of Education and Research in South Korea

Introduction

Pusan National University (PNU), also known as Busan National University, stands as a beacon of higher education in South Korea. Established on May 15, 1946, it holds the distinction of being Korea's first national university. Throughout its rich history, PNU has played a pivotal role in the nation's industrialization and democratization, solidifying its position as a leading regional hub university. With a commitment to truth, freedom, and service, PNU continues to shape the future of South Korea and beyond.

The Genesis of a National Institution

The establishment of PNU was fueled by a fervent desire to cultivate human resources essential for Korea's progress following its independence in 1945. Despite the challenges of a post-war environment, local citizens and authorities in Gyeongsangnam-do united to realize their shared dream of a national university. The Gyeongsangnam-do leadership focused its energies on establishing a national university, which was the dream expressed by local citizens. Their efforts culminated in securing KRW 10 million for the university foundation fund, a proposal initiated by the United States Military Government in Korea. Demonstrating remarkable regional spirit, residents and businesses collectively donated nearly KRW 10,330,000, surpassing the initial target.

The collaborative efforts of Gyeongsangnam-do Academic Division Director In-Ku Yun and School Affairs Advisor Lieutenant Eddy, along with relevant agencies, led to the final approval from the education ministries of Korea and the United States. On May 15, 1946, Pusan National University was officially established. Subsequently, on September 15 of the same year, the Decree on the Establishment of National Universities was revised, and the Presidential Decree on the Establishment of Pusan National University was announced, solidifying PNU's status as a comprehensive national university.

Securing a Foundation: The Hyowon Campus

The first president of Pusan National University, In-Ku Yun, faced significant challenges in securing a campus site despite the university's establishment in 1946. President Yun sought cooperation from General Richard Whitcomb, the commander of the United Nations Forces Supply Depot in Busan. General Whitcomb's agreement to provide materials worth $250,000 from the Armed Forces Assistance to Korea (AFAK) funds proved instrumental in the university's development. Consequently, the university administration identified and completed the formal procedures to acquire a new campus site of approximately 1.65 million square meters (50 hectares) in Jangjeon-dong.

In early 1954, PNU procured the site for its main campus, an expansive area of 1.65 million square meters nestled on the eastern slopes of Geumjeong Mountain. The Hyowon Building construction ceremony in December of that year marked the beginning of the 'Age of the Hyowon Campus'. The Saebyeokbeol Hyowon Campus embodied the university's motto of truth, freedom, and service, providing a permanent foundation for higher education and research.
