A Comprehensive Guide to Freshman Dorms at Prairie View A&M University
Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), a historical powerhouse and beacon of Black excellence, offers a variety of on-campus housing options. Living on campus is highly encouraged, especially for underclassmen, as it helps build community and enhances the student experience. This guide provides essential information for incoming freshmen about dorm life at PVAMU, including move-in procedures and accommodation options.
Move-In Information and Requirements
Fall Move-In
The Fall move-in period is an exciting time as the campus welcomes students to their home away from home. For instance, Fall 2020 move-in day began August 15th and ran through August 21st.
COVID-19 Protocols
Considering the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic, the university continues to adjust its response in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus. During certain periods, such as the Fall of 2021, PVAMU required students to participate in on-site testing upon checking in to their on-campus housing. Students moving in on specific dates were required to provide proof of a negative test received no more than 24 hours before move-in.
Due to the availability of vaccines to a large majority, responsibility has been placed on students to effectively manage their COVID status. While vaccinations may not be required to return to campus, vaccination is the most effective way to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and are, therefore, strongly encouraged. Face coverings are also highly recommended indoors and outdoors when physical distancing is not possible. Students have free access to on-campus PCR diagnostic tests if needed.
Move-In Day Procedures
In the past, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone was required to wear a mask, physically distance themselves, and adhere to occupancy guidelines. Each resident was assigned a specific move-in date and time and limited to only 2 guests assisting with their move. Upon entering the campus from University Drive, students were directed to make the first left at T.R. Solomon Street.

Students who test positive may not be able to complete the move-in process and may be required to complete an isolation period at their permanent residence until Health Services clears them to return to campus. They will also receive instructions on academic policy and procedures.
Accessing Information

Individual Lease Agreements: An individual lease provides each resident with their own separate lease agreement and responsibility for only his/her rental installments and applicable utility and parking charges.
Installment Payments: The typical lease term is approximately 9.5 months of occupancy, coinciding with the university’s academic calendar. The lease agreement reflects the total rent amount divided into installments due September 1 - January 1.
Roommate Matching
PVAMU's roommate matching program is powered by RoomSync-a roommate matching app. Students have the opportunity to create a personal profile, search, filter, chat, and match with other residents who will be living in the community. You decide what matters most when narrowing down your search. Want a roommate with the same major? You got it! Prefer to live with someone who goes to bed early? No problem! Looking for a roommate who enjoys college football? No sweat!
Financial Considerations
Renters Insurance
Renters insurance is not required but highly recommended, as coverage for your personal belongings is not included as part of your Lease Agreement.
Housing Deferment
Housing Deferment is an application where you can upload your Award Letter for review to see if you have enough aid to qualify for approval.

Payment Options
PVAMU accepts credit cards, debit cards, and ACH payments online through the Resident Portal. The guarantor will need to sign the guaranty agreement. You're only responsible for your student's rent - never someone else's!
