Decoding College Mottos: More Than Just Words

College mottos, often etched in stone or emblazoned on crests, are more than just catchy phrases. They encapsulate an institution's core values, aspirations, and mission, serving as a guiding force for students, faculty, and alumni alike. These mottos, whether in Latin, English, or other languages, aim to inspire, differentiate, and provide a sense of identity in a rapidly changing world. This article delves into the significance of college mottos, exploring various examples and their impact on the institutions they represent.

The Essence of a College Motto

A university slogan isn't just a catchy line; it's the institution's essence in a nutshell. It communicates the university's identity and captures attention. A memorable slogan should be concise, clear, and reflective of the university's unique brand. It should resonate with the target audience, attracting students and parents who align with the institution's values.

College branding is all about differentiation, and a good tagline may turn off as many students as it turns on. That’s not a problem if the students (and parents) the tagline resonates with are right for the school - these students are far more likely to apply, be accepted, matriculate, and graduate. Never test your tagline. Let’s face it, your institution isn’t-and shouldn’t be-for everyone, and if your tagline is coherently communicating the character of your institution, it shouldn’t resonate with everyone either. This is good advice, as even most national consumer brands don’t try to appeal to everyone, but rather craft a brand message that is specific enough to resonate with their target segment(s).

Famous College Mottos and Their Meanings

Many distinctive and inspiring mottos are engraved in higher education across the world, reflecting an institution's values, ethos, and mission. Here are a few examples:

  • "Veritas" (Harvard University): This Latin word simply means "Truth." It underscores the school's commitment to the pursuit of truth, knowledge, and understanding in all fields.

  • "Lux et Veritas" (Yale University): Translating from Latin to "Light and Truth," this motto signifies the university's mission to illuminate the world with knowledge and truth. Yale’s motto is Light and Truth-Lux et Veritas in Latin, Urim v’Thummim in Hebrew-and you will see it etched ubiquitously on crests around campus. Colleges and universities like Yale are home to artists, scholars, scientists, and practitioners who spend their entire lives searching for truth. As we search for truth, we must also be mindful of the power and influence of institutions like Yale. We must recognize, with humility, that what looks like a truth might not be one. Nonetheless, at Yale, I have often observed our faculty actively encouraging students to interrogate data and other ideas presented to them, and I have seen students change their minds when confronted with contrary evidence. Every one of you will have that experience as part of your Yale education.

  • “In Deo Speramus” (Brown University): This Latin phrase translates to "In God We Hope," reflecting the original religious intentions of the university's founders.

  • “Scientia et Virtus” (Johns Hopkins University): This motto translates to "Knowledge and Virtue," emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct in the pursuit of knowledge.

College Mottos as a Branding Tool

I think we have to ask ourselves what the purpose of the tagline is as part of an overall college branding effort. In most cases, the tagline isn’t enough to state the brand premise. Rather, it should be consistent with the school’s branding and have some kind of emotional payload. One also has to ask whether a tagline differentiates the school from other institutions in any significant way. I rather like the approach used by University of Alaska - Fairbanks in all of their slogans, but particularly, “A 360+ Million-Acre Classroom.” Particularly for out of state students, this sets the school apart from the competition in a very unique way.

Examples of College Mottos

  • Miami University, Oxford, OH: For Love and Honor.
  • Bowling Green State, OH: Changing the world by degrees.
  • South Georgia College uses A Degree of Difference.
  • University of Alaska, Fairbanks: Latitude with Attitude. The school also uses the slogan America’s Arctic University and A 360+ Million-Acre Classroom.
  • Notre Dame: Nowhere but Notre Dame.
  • Montreat College: Christ-Centered Student-Focused Service-Driven.
  • Princeton University: Princeton in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations.

The Enduring Relevance of College Mottos

Mottos serve as a guiding force for an institution, its faculty, and students. They can inspire, guide decision-making, and serve as grounding principles in a rapidly changing world. They provide a sense of continuity and tradition, connecting current students and faculty with the institution's history and values.

The Role of Universities in Upholding Truth

For our part, colleges and universities must combat the spread of misinformation, propaganda, and conjured conspiracy theories first by supporting faculty; they generate scientific data and scholarly insight. But to do so effectively, our institutions of higher education-faculty and students-must be open to engaging with diverse ideas, whether conventional or unconventional, of the left or of the right.

Yale is committed to the responsibility of promoting the public’s trust in academic research, expertise, and the value of higher education by ensuring that Mr. Philosophy 181 reflects this responsibility.

Wake Forest University: Pro Humanitate

Wake Forest University’s commitment to academic excellence; embrace of a relational and inclusive campus community; and partnerships in Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Washington, D.C. and around the world are all in service of our motto: Pro Humanitate. Translated as “For Humanity,” Pro Humanitate calls upon the entire University community to engage in the fundamental questions about what it means to be human. No matter the size or scope of the act, placing the needs of others before our own is a tradition Unrivaled by Any. Personal engagement is a cornerstone of the Wake Forest experience and the mission of Pro Humanitate. The Call to Conversation program brought Wake Foresters from across the globe together for candid exchange in order to achieve perspective and understanding.

The words, “Pro Humanitate,” first appeared on the seal of Wake Forest College in 1908.

College Mottos Around the World

Many universities, as they are established, naturally adopt a logo, a crest, and a motto. Some of these mottos have stood the test of time. These were presumably meant to encapsulate the ambition and vision for the new institution and provide motivation for students and staff alike. It’s not just an issue for ancient and older universities. Many newer universities have also adopted a motto which is, more often than not, in Latin - though some UK universities do have English mottos. Around the world, a similar mix can be observed, with many universities plumping for Latin rather than their native languages. China, Malaysia, India, and Mexico have generally avoided the Latin trend, but universities in most other countries seem to find it irresistible.
