Historical Roots and Evolution
The story of Randall University is deeply intertwined with the history of the Free Will Baptists in Oklahoma and the United States. Efforts to establish Free Will Baptist higher education in Oklahoma began before statehood. Records from the Indian Territory Association of Free Will Baptists in 1905 expressed support for "a higher system of education among the Free Will Baptists." The journey began with Tecumseh College, established by western Free Will Baptists in 1917, with John H. Wolfe, a Hillsdale College graduate, serving as its first president.
However, a fire in 1927 destroyed the Tecumseh campus. Oklahoma churches maintained the goal of creating a permanent institution. Those efforts developed into Oklahoma Bible College (OBC), which officially opened in 1959 in the basement of First Free Will Baptist Church in Tulsa. The institution underwent a significant transformation in 1971 when the board renamed the school Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in honor of the historic Free Will Baptist institution in Michigan. The most recent name change occurred in 2015, when the Oklahoma State Association of Free Will Baptists voted to rename the school Randall University, honoring abolitionist preacher Benjamin Randall (1749-1808), founder of the Free Will Baptists in New England.
