Understanding the Requirements for a Regents Honors Diploma

Earning a Regents diploma in New York State signifies a student's successful completion of high school graduation requirements. However, for students seeking a more distinguished academic achievement, the Regents Honors Diploma provides an elevated goal. This article breaks down the requirements for earning a Regents diploma, with a focus on the distinct criteria for achieving the Honors designation, and the Advanced Designation.

Core Requirements for a Regents Diploma

To graduate with a Regents diploma, students in New York State must fulfill specific requirements encompassing both coursework and examinations. These requirements are put in place by the NYS Education Department.

Credit Requirements:

Students must earn 22 units of credit in grades 9-12. This means successfully completing courses and accumulating the necessary credits for each. The distribution of these credits across different subject areas is mandated to ensure a well-rounded education. The mandatory core curriculum accounts for 18.5 credits of the total 22 required. Students are enrolled in at least 5.5 credits each year (5 classes plus PE), but may select more credits if they wish. The credit breakdown is as follows:

  • English: 4 units/credits
  • Social Studies: 4 units/credits
  • Science (Living Environment and Physical Science): 3 units/credits
  • Math: 3 units/credits
  • Physical Education: 2 units/credits
  • Visual, Music, Performance Arts: 1 unit/credit
  • Foreign Language (Language Other Than English - LOTE): 1 unit/credit
  • Health: 0.5 unit/credit
  • Electives: 3.5 units/credits
  • Service Learning: A District requirement of 30 hours total.

In addition to the total number of credits needed to graduate, there is a requirement that all students carry at least 6.5 credits per year (seniors may carry 5.5 credits).

Regents Exam Requirements:

In addition to earning the required credits, students must pass five Regents exams. Regents exams are given in core subjects like English, US History, Global History, Mathematics, and Science. A passing grade is 65% or higher on each exam.

Advanced Regents Diploma Requirements

An Advanced Regents Diploma signifies a more rigorous academic path. It demonstrates a deeper understanding and mastery of subject material. To earn this distinction, students must meet stricter requirements than those for a standard Regents Diploma.

Credit Requirements:

Like the standard Regents Diploma, the Advanced Regents Diploma requires a total of 22 credits. The distribution of credits differs slightly to reflect the more advanced coursework:

  • English: 4 units/credits
  • Social Studies: 4 units/credits
  • Science (Living Environment and Physical Science): 3 units/credits
  • Math (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trigonometry): 3 units/credits
  • Physical Education: 2 units/credits
  • Visual, Music, Performance Arts: 1 unit/credit
  • Foreign Language (Language Other Than English - LOTE): 3 units/credit
  • Health: 0.5 unit/credit
  • Electives: 1.5 units/credits
  • Service Learning: A District requirement of 30 hours total.

Regents Exam Requirements:

The key difference lies in the number of Regents exams required. For an Advanced Regents Diploma, students must pass a minimum of eight Regents exams. This includes the five core exams required for the standard diploma, plus additional exams in mathematics and science, and potentially a foreign language.

Regents Diploma with Honors

Students who excel on their Regents exams may be awarded a Regents Diploma with Honors. To achieve this, students must complete all required Regents exams and achieve an average score of 90% or higher across all exams. This signifies exceptional performance and a comprehensive understanding of the material.

Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Mastery in Math

The Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Mastery in Math is a specialized recognition for students demonstrating exceptional mathematical proficiency. It requires meeting all assessment requirements for the Regents with Advanced Designation. Students must also score 85 or better on each of three Regents Examinations in Mathematics.

Alternative Diploma Options

Recognizing that not all students learn in the same way or at the same pace, New York State provides alternative diploma options for students who may face challenges in meeting the standard requirements.

Local High School Diploma:

Students with disabilities who score 55-64 on any of the required Regents examinations may earn a local diploma. Students with disabilities who fail one or more Regents Examinations and who pass the corresponding Regents Competency Test (RCT) will receive a local diploma. Note: This does not apply to students entering grade 9 as of 2011. Students who successfully appeal two Regents Examination scores within three points of the 65 passing score and who meet the other requirements of the appeals process specified in CR 100.5(d)(7) will earn a local diploma.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) Diploma:

Students with disabilities that preclude the successful completion of the standard New York high school diploma requirements can earn an Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma. Standards for IEP diplomas are designed for each student according to his or her needs. IEP students who take and pass the Regents examinations may earn a local diploma. A student identified as having a disability which adversely affects the ability to learn a language may be exempted from the LOTE requirements if the student's IEP states that such requirements are not appropriate.

Compensatory Safety Net Option:

This option allows students to compensate for a low score on one Regents exam with a higher score on another. Specifically, students can score between 45-54 on one or more of the five required Regents exams (excluding English Language Arts (ELA) or mathematics). To use this option, the student must compensate for the low score with a score of 65 or higher on another required Regents exam. A score of at least 55 must be earned on both the ELA and mathematics exams.

Foreign Language Credit

Students are offered the opportunity to earn the required Foreign Language credit in 8th grade. The Checkpoint A exam is required for graduation, and is offered at the end of their accelerated 8th grade study.
