Introduction

River Oaks Baptist School (ROBS) is a private, Christian, co-educational day school located in Houston, Texas, serving students from preschool through middle school. For over six decades, ROBS has blended ambitious academics with robust character and spiritual development, fostering a unique environment where children love learning.

History and Founding

Founded in 1955 by River Oaks Baptist Church, the school began as a weekly preschool and kindergarten with just two teachers and 30 students. Responding to growing demand, the school gradually expanded its offerings, celebrating its first eighth-grade graduating class in 1979. By 1980, with 527 students enrolled across preschool, lower school, and middle school, a significant campus enlargement project was initiated. The campus master plan was completed in 2006, and today, the school serves approximately 850 students from age two to eighth grade. In 2016, the school celebrated its 60th anniversary.

ROBS offers a preschool-to-eighth-grade trajectory, which studies show is ideal for children’s development. The Middle School program thoughtfully stewards students’ transformation from children to teens, embracing the intellectual, physical, and social-emotional changes this stage brings. The burst of neural activity during this window makes Middle School a prime time to embrace new experiences and pursue bigger challenges. The school offers myriad opportunities for children to explore-on the sports field, in the arts studio, behind the camera, in the Maker Space, and on stage.

Library

The 9,000 square feet (840 m2) ROBS school library opened in 1997. It includes an open area that functions as a storytelling space and an area for school receptions. Designed by Kirksey Architects, the library also houses a large central reading room, an after-school study area, the office of the head librarian, a work area for other library employees, and a work area for volunteers. In 2014, the library welcomed the addition of a new wing, dedicated to making and editing footage for a daily morning announcement show called KROB.

New Middle School Building

In town hall meetings held in April 2017, ROBS leaders laid out their exciting plans for the School's future, including the construction of a new Middle School building completely designed around the way children learn best. The Board of Trustees decided that the building should fit in with the existing Georgian architecture and signify that something special was happening there. The new building is designed to strengthen the bonds among students, teachers, and the entire ROBS community. Each grade will “own” a whole floor, complete with classrooms, an advanced science lab, and a spacious room where the entire grade can gather. Outdoor terraces and balconies will extend classrooms, while a room for Bible instruction and adjacent prayer garden will provide peaceful sanctuary. The additional space allows for expansion of the curriculum and the student body. The building will include a versatile black-box theater; dedicated music rooms for instrumental and choral instruction; studio spaces for visual arts; a high-tech hub for robotics, graphic design, and photography; and an underground parking garage. While the student body will grow, individual class size will diminish.

Athletics

River Oaks Baptist School competes in the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference along with 10 other schools. ROBS fields teams in basketball, cross-country, football, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. ROBS has more than 14 teams and enjoys almost complete participation in extra-curricular activities.

Extracurricular Activities and Events

ROBS is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education through a variety of extracurricular programs. From sports and music to drama and robotics, the offerings allow students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build lifelong passions. Extracurricular activities teach valuable life skills, including teamwork, leadership, and perseverance, contributing to the holistic development of each student.

ROBS holds an annual Reading Festival to promote reading and to expand the library's collection of books. Authors of children's books visit campus to talk with students about writing, illustrating, and publishing and to conduct writing workshops with older students. Past visiting authors have included Willy Claflin, Nathan Hale(twice!), R.J. Palacio, Kelly Milner Halls, Grace Lin, Ken Oppel, and Rick Riordan.

Uniforms

River Oaks Baptist School requires school uniforms for students in lower and middle school. Girls wear white or red shirts and plaid or navy skirts, jumpers, or pants. Boys wear white or red shirts and navy shorts or pants. Eighth graders may wear navy shirts and khaki skirts, shorts, or pants. On chapel days, students are required to wear button-up shirts for chapel. Boys in 6th grade and above must wear slacks.

Awards and Recognition

The Department of Education named ROBS a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School. It was one of three Houston area schools and the only private school in Texas to receive the award in 2019. ROBS is a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School.

Notable Alumni

Justise Winslow, a current NBA basketball player for the Miami Heat, attended River Oaks Baptist.
