Established at the request of William Quarter, Bishop of Chicago, Saint Xavier University began as Saint Francis Xavier Female Academy. By 1847, the academy received a state charter, granting it the authority to confer degrees.
Today, SXU's main campus spans 109 acres in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago.
