Each year, the SAISD Foundation supports more than 200 students through scholarships and Emergency Gap Funding awards, helping remove barriers to enrolling and stepping onto campus for their first semester of higher education. The scholarships and gap funding managed by the SAISD Foundation are done so in partnership with the College and Career Readiness Team for the District and the Lead Counselors and College Bound Advisors in SAISD high schools.

The SAISD Foundation accepts donations, planned gifts and bequests from alumni, businesses, and community donors.

The SAISD Foundation awards over 150 scholarships annually to graduating seniors in San Antonio ISD. These scholarships vary in amount and eligibility criteria, catering to a diverse range of students and academic pursuits. Here's a detailed look at some of the named scholarships:

General Scholarships

  • Alpha Scholarship Program: Supports first-generation college students. One scholarship is awarded to a Lanier High School graduating senior, and another is awarded district-wide to a graduating senior from any SAISD high school. This scholarship is being awarded in memory of Belle Ortiz for SAISD students who are pursuing a college degree. Belle believed in higher education and the talented students in SAISD.
  • Dr. C. Vela Scholarship: Supports graduating seniors in SAISD. It aims to support students with high involvement in their high school and community/church.
  • Louis S. Tamez Scholarship: Given by the family of Louis S. Tamez, a native San Antonian and SAISD graduate.
  • Manny E. Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating senior at Jefferson High School who plans to pursue a career in business and has a history of community service and civic engagement.

  • Brackenridge Alumni - LTC Michael Arguello USAF and Vanessa Montez Scholarship: This $1,000 scholarship is made possible by the generous donation of Brackenridge Alumni - LTC Michael Arguello USAF c/o 1998 and Vanessa Montez c/o 1999.
  • Burbank Class of '89 Scholarships: Two $1,000 scholarships presented by the Burbank Class of ’89 in honor of Janet Bardgett, longtime Luther Burbank school counselor.

This scholarship serves as a tribute to the work and life of SAISD Police Officer Cliff Martinez who served with the SAISD Police Department for 28 years. Cliff was also a proud SAISD graduate of Highlands High School.
  • David L. Dr. C. Basketball Memorial Scholarship: This $2,000 scholarship, renewable for 2 years, was created to award a Thomas Jefferson High School senior who played basketball in memory of '76 alumni David L.
  • Donald McClure Scholarship: Awarded to graduating seniors from Sam Houston High School who plan to enroll in a four-year college, university, or trade school.
  • Edison P-TECH Program Scholarship: This one-year, $1,000 scholarship is to support Edison students who participated in the FinPrep program of Edison P-TECH to support their educational journey at a four-year college, university, or trade school. Students who completed their Real Estate license will also qualify for this scholarship. Funds have been generously provided by Broadway Bank to support students who are graduating from the Edison International Business P-TECH Program with an Associate's Degree and are accepted to an accredited college, university, or trade school. Student Eligibility: Graduating seniors from Edison High School who have been enrolled in the Edison P-TECH program in International Business and successfully completed the Broadway Bank FinPrep Program led by employees of Broadway Bank.
  • Elvira Mungia Scholarship: This one-year $1,000 scholarship was initiated to honor the life and legacy of Elvira Mungia, a proud Jefferson alumna and former Ballet Folklorico dancer, and invest in a student participant today who is enrolling in college.
  • Fox Tech Alumni Scholarships: Six $1,000 scholarships offered to graduating Seniors from Fox Tech high school who are pursuing further education at a two-year or four-year college or university.
  • Gerald F. Doebbler Award for Chemistry: The Gerald F. Doebbler Award for Chemistry ($500) is awarded annually to a graduating senior from Brackenridge High School. This award is given for the purpose of providing support to a graduating senior at Brackenridge who is pursuing further studies at a university (or community college) in Chemistry. The student will be selected by the Chemistry teachers at Brackenridge based on interest and performance in the subject.
  • Jane E. Knowlton Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating Senior at Jefferson High School planning to continue their education at a college in Texas.
  • Jerry Avalos Scholarship: Awarded to graduating Seniors at Edison High School. Preference given for an athlete, specifically Football.
  • John Reuben Garcia Memorial Scholarship: This $1,000 scholarship donated by colleagues, friends and family of John Reuben Garcia will be awarded to a graduating senior at Highlands High School who exemplifies his work ethic, commitment to community service and love of Highlands High School.   • Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Duane Bryd Memorial Scholarship: For a senior graduating from Brackenridge who is also a JRTOC cadet in good standing during their 8-year tenure.
  • Maria A. Jimenez Memorial Scholarship: A graduating senior from Edison High School who exemplifies Ms. Jimenez’s commitment to her work and excellence.
  • Friends of Sam Houston R. A. Johnson Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating senior athlete from Sam Houston High School who plans to enroll in a four-year college, university, or trade school.
  • Forever22 Scholarship: These two $1,100 scholarships are given by the Sam Houston community, family and friends of Khadija Derry and Aujayna Williams to honor and remember them. Dija and Nae were alumni of Sam Houston High School, and were big-hearted, dedicated athletes of strong character. Through these scholarships to current Sam Houston athletes, we are creating a legacy of students going on to do great things as Dija and Nae would have done.

  • Semesters must be taken consecutively within a 4-year period.
  • Eligibility must be maintained throughout the program.
  • Students must have financial need, as determined by the FAFSA.
  • Students must have graduated high school within 16 months of initial enrollment as a first-time freshman.
  • Complete a minimum of 24 hours in fall and spring semesters (12 credit hours per semester).

It is part of the UT San Antonio’s effort to make college more affordable for our students. Incoming fall freshmen who qualify will have their tuition covered 100% for eight fall/spring semesters. The semesters must be taken consecutively within a 4-year time period (approx. $40,000 value across four years) and eligibility must be maintained.

Postsecondary Navigators

SAISD graduating seniors and recent graduates have access to Postsecondary Navigators who help young alumni through all the steps in the college enrollment process throughout the year. They also advise and help when students transfer schools. If college is not part of your plan, Postsecondary Navigators help you connect to workforce or military programs.

New Teacher Support

  • New Teacher Shopping Day: New-to-SAISD teachers can shop and purchase items, up to $100, to help set up their classroom at partnering stores.
  • New Teacher Grants: The SAISD Foundation has awarded more than 1,400 new teacher grants to educators in SAISD.

Mini-Grants

Mini-Grants are open to all SAISD educators and employees. Grants are up to $500.
