Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Programs: An Overview
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is committed to improving community health and well-being. It achieves this by training humanistic clinicians and scientists and turning discoveries into patient-centered care. Besides the M.D. program, the College of Medicine offers master's and doctoral programs, as well as certificate programs, to meet various academic and professional interests.
Degree Programs Offered
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine offers a variety of programs:
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.): The college’s flagship program trains future physicians.

Admission Requirements and Application Process
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Program
Applicants for the Doctorate of Medicine degree must start by completing an American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application online.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or unconditional permanent residents with an alien registration receipt card.
- Applicants must take the MCAT exam no later than the fall preceding the year they hope to enroll and release their scores.
Application Process
- AMCAS Application: Complete the AMCAS application online.
- Secondary Application: Applicants with a verified AMCAS application will be invited to complete a secondary application.
- Residency: Residents of any state may apply. To be considered a Florida resident, applicants must list Florida as their state of legal residence on their AMCAS application.
Prerequisites
While specific courses are not explicitly required, the College of Medicine strongly encourages applicants to broaden their education by supplementing coursework in math and science with their own academic interests. The deadline for completing all prerequisite coursework is the end of the spring semester or quarter before matriculation. Accepted students must submit final official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended in the United States and Canada to confirm completion of required courses and receipt of a bachelor’s degree.
Holistic Review Process
The admissions committee uses a holistic review process to evaluate applicants, considering their capacity as future medical students and physicians and their ability to contribute to the College of Medicine's diversity.

Graduation Requirements
Students must receive the MSPPSC's recommendation for graduation and receipt of the Doctorate of Medicine degree.
Master of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Science
The Master of Science (M.S.) program in Biomedical Science is designed for students interested in advanced studies in biomedical science. It offers both thesis and non-thesis options.
Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 credits.
- Prerequisites include one year each of biology, chemistry, and physics; one semester each of biochemistry and organic chemistry; and at least two upper-division biology classes. No credit can be more than seven years old at the time of application.
Thesis Option
- Requires a minimum of 30 credits, including coursework, a minimum of 6 thesis credits, and 3 thesis-related research credits.
- Students must make a formal research proposal to their committees within their first year before enrolling in thesis credits.
- Students must make a formal thesis presentation and defense in the semester they plan to graduate.
- All thesis students must receive certification of completion of the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program.
Non-Thesis Option
- Requires a minimum of 30 graduate-level credits.
- Students design a course of study with their advisor's approval.
Changing Options
Students wishing to change from the non-thesis option to the thesis option must submit a letter of support from their thesis advisor to the Office of Graduate Programs. A maximum of 6 credits from the thesis career can be applied toward the non-thesis career upon approval by the Office of Graduate Programs.
Ph.D. in Integrative Biology
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine offers a doctoral program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Integrative Biology. This is a joint program with the Department of Biological Sciences of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science in which students can pursue interests across a number of fields, including marine science, biomedical science, biotechnology and biology.
Ph.D. in Neuroscience
The doctoral program in Neuroscience is a multi-college, multi-institute interdisciplinary degree program organized in partnership with the FAU Brain Institute. Graduate-level instruction is provided by faculty in multiple departments located in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, the Charles Schmidt College of Medicine, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Education and the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. Affiliated faculty from the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Research Florida also participate in the program. The program aims to equip students with the advanced conceptual and technical skills needed to forge productive, neuroscience-oriented careers in industry, academia and government.

Certificate Programs
Biomedical Science Certificate
The Biomedical Science certificate provides master's and Ph.D. students with an integrated background in the biomedical sciences. It requires 12 credits and is designed with flexibility. Enrollment is managed by the Graduate Program Office in the College of Medicine.
Genomics and Predictive Health Certificate
The Genomics and Predictive Health certificate offers master's and Ph.D. students an integrated background in genomics and predictive health. It requires a minimum of 12 graduate credits of coursework. Enrollment is overseen by the Graduate Program Office in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.
Combined Bachelor's/M.D. Programs
FAU Schmidt College of Medicine offers two programs that allow students to achieve both their B.S. and M.D. degrees:
- 7-8-year B.S./M.D. Program: Offered on the Jupiter Campus in collaboration with the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College.
- FAU High School M.D. Direct Program: A collaborative program between FAU High School and the College of Medicine.
To qualify for these programs, students must be accepted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and complete the Bachelor’s/M.D. program.
Pre-Health Professions Advising
Students who wish to pursue a traditional admission path to medical school can connect with advisors at the Pre-Health Professions Office. Recommended degree programs include Neuroscience, Biology, Medical Biology, and Chemistry (Biochemistry).

Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium
The FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium was formed in the fall of 2011 with five Palm Beach County hospitals: Bethesda Hospital East; Boca Raton Regional Hospital; and Tenet HealthCare system’s Delray Medical Center, St.
Residency and Fellowship Programs
- General Surgery Residency Program: Approved in 2016 for a total of 45 clinical positions and up to seven positions for a unique value-added year of scholarship and research.
- Emergency Medicine Residency Program: Approved in 2016 for a total of 18 positions.
- Psychiatry Residency Program: A 4-year program approved.
- Neurology Residency Program: A 4-year program approved.
- Cardiology Fellowship Program: A 3-year program approved.
