Crafting a Heartfelt Scholarship Thank You Letter: Examples and Guidance
Scholarship donors are generous and caring individuals who invest in the educational journeys of students. A well-written thank you note is a special way to show your appreciation and let the donor know the impact of their support. You were awarded a scholarship because of your exemplary academic abilities and/or your financial need. The following guidelines and examples will help you create a sincere and impactful thank you letter.
Key Elements of an Effective Thank You Letter
- Accuracy and Clarity: Ensure your letter is free of grammatical and spelling errors. Proofread carefully and double-check for typos.
- Sincerity and Enthusiasm: Express genuine gratitude and let your enthusiasm for your education shine through. Be yourself.
- Timeliness: Be sure to complete your thank you note by the provided deadline.
- Professional Format: Send it in typewritten in business format including all of the elements of a letter: your name, date, salutation, body, closing, and a signature. One page is appropriate.
- Personalization: Scholarship donors wish to know the students who are recipients of their scholarship gift and the impact of that support.
Structure of Your Thank You Letter
Salutation: Use a formal salutation with appropriate titles. Do not use first names. The fund background that accompanies your offer letter lists all individuals to thank and their preferred salutation. If you have been asked to thank more than one individual, please provide a separate document for each household, using their preferred salutation.
Introduction: Begin by introducing yourself and thanking the donor. Be clear and concise. Begin by explaining why you are sending the letter and thanking the donor. Examples: "Thanks again for your gift." "Thanks again. I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for make the [Name of Scholarship] possible. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this honor and I am deeply appreciative of your support.
- Example: "I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for choosing me as a recipient of the Ogontz Campus General Scholarship."
- Example: "I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for making the [Name of Scholarship] possible."
- Example: "I am sincerely honored to have been selected as a recipient of the [Name of Scholarship]."
- Example: "It is a great honor to receive your generous Barry and Renee Brandeis Scholarship that will help fund the expenses of my education at Penn State. I am most grateful for your belief and support, and I would like to thank you for choosing me."
Body Paragraph(s): Tell something about yourself. The donor will have received your past letters. This letter should be an update, including such information as classes you have taken and insight into your progress. Share a little about yourself (your goals, background) and indicate why the scholarship is important. Talk about your experiences at RCC. What year are you in? What is your major? When are you expecting to graduate? Express your gratitude for the scholarship and how it is going to help you. Do not tell the donor how you are going to use the money unless you know what the scholarship covers. (Example: You have a tuition only scholarship, and you tell them you are going to use the money to buy books). Provide a brief description of your activities such as research, special programs, student organizations, student projects, work experience and leadership experience. Examples: Why you chose Fresno State. Your course of study. Let them know how this scholarship has helped to further your education.

- Mention any research, special programs, student organizations, work experience, or leadership roles you are involved in.
- Explain how the scholarship has impacted your ability to pursue your education and achieve your goals.
- Example: "I am currently majoring in Criminal Justice and hope to go into the field of law."
- Example: "Beginning this coming fall, I will be a freshman at UIC [or UIUC or UIS] in the Urban Education program in the College of Education. Besides my parents, the one person that I feel most influenced me as I was growing up was my sixth grade teacher."
- Example: "I am a Junior studying Elementary and Early Childhood Education with a minor in Writing. My love for teaching and the liberal arts has molded me into an individual who would adore a career as a preschool teacher while writing sci-fi novels at night. Although my academic journey as a first-generation college student has not been an easy one, I am proud to admit that my perseverance has led me to pursue many opportunities offered at Penn State. For the past year, I have been completing ACURA research, and studying the effects of different teaching methods on young children. Although my research is still ongoing, I am excited to see where it will take me. Closing Paragraph: Thank your donor again for the scholarship and let the donor know how much you appreciate their generous contribution to your education. Express your gratitude for the scholarship and how it is going to help you. Thank the donor for his or her generosity in providing this scholarship.

Additional Tips
- University-Specific Requirements: You may be required to complete a thank you note in Scholarship Universe and/or your Financial Aid Portal. On your dashboard, navigate to the Actions Required section. All thank you notes for UMD Scholarships require you to upload a Scholarship Universe profile picture before your thank you note can be completed. If you do not have a profile picture of yourself that you can or are willing to use, please save the following picture of Testudo and use it as your profile picture. Your letter must be completed and submitted online via ScholarWeb.
- Visuals: Insert a high resolution photo of yourself.
- Proofreading: Proofread your letter thoroughly to ensure spelling, grammar, and punctuation is correct and all components are included. Pay careful attention to the grammar, spelling, and organization of your letter.
- Originality: The next page has an example of what a proper letter should look like. You should write your thank you letter in this format, but please be sure to use your own words. Please do not copy this letter. If your letter is not written in this format, we may not accept your letter which could delay the release of your funds or have your scholarship revoked.
- Scholarship Coverage: Do not tell the donor how you are going to use the money unless you know what the scholarship covers.
