Navigating Scholarship Universe at Western Michigan University: A Comprehensive Guide
For many students, the prospect of financing a college education can be daunting. Scholarships play a crucial role in making higher education accessible. At Western Michigan University (WMU), Scholarship Universe serves as a vital tool, connecting students with a wide array of scholarship opportunities. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of Scholarship Universe and other financial aid options available to WMU students.
The Transformative Power of Scholarships
The impact of receiving a scholarship can be life-changing. As one WMU student shared, “Receiving the phone call that I received the Foundation Scholarship changed my life completely. And every single day that I'm at Western, there's an impact that someone makes in my life. I don't know what life would be without the scholarship.” This sentiment underscores the importance of scholarships in enabling students to pursue their academic goals and reach their full potential.
Understanding Scholarship Universe
WMU has more than 50 endowed scholarships available to degree-seeking students through the generous support of donors. Scholarship Universe is WMU’s tool for students to identify and apply for scholarships, both institutional and private, that they might qualify for. To access the system please visit: wmich.scholarshipuniverse.com. Here, you will be asked to sign in with you Bronco NetID and password.
Getting Started with Scholarship Universe
To use the system for the first time, click on “I’m Ready!” and begin answering questions. If you have used Scholarship Universe before, you will be directed to your student dashboard and should click the grey Banner in the top middle of the screen to answer new screening questions. You can also access these questions in the “Questions” tab on the upper left-hand side of the screen.
If this is your first time accessing the system, you will have the option to provide your phone number to receive SMS text message updates regarding upcoming deadlines and other important information from Scholarship Universe.

The Scholarship Universe system already knows some things about you, like your major, GPA, and financial information you used to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). But your responses to questions in the system will help determine what scholarships you may qualify for. The more questions you answer, the more likely you are to find a scholarship that may be a good fit.
Maximizing Your Scholarship Search
Take some time to review your matches. If you would like to apply to an internal or WMU scholarship that is listed in the system, you can click on apply and submit all of your application materials here, in one place! You can also use the system to search for a specific scholarship. (However, please keep in mind that not all WMU scholarships are available in Scholarship Universe at this time). You can click on the Scholarships tab and then select the Sort/Filter option on the top right corner. You can sort by internal School Scholarships, search by name, or filter for specific college or department.
Keep in mind that you must meet minimum matching requirements as established by the offering department to be able to apply to many scholarships.
It is recommended that you log in to Scholarship Universe periodically to stay up to date on any new scholarships that are posted and to monitor the status of the applications you have already submitted.

WMU Foundation and National WMU Scholarships
The WMU Foundation and national WMU assist Southern Baptist students, including the children of Baptist missionaries (NAMB & IMB), and those preparing for Baptist missions service with scholarships. Ask two references to submit an online endorsement form by December 31, before the close of business (4:30 pm CST). Only one WMU and only one academic endorsement will be accepted for each applicant. The first endorsement MUST be completed by a WMU leader such as a WMU director, state or associational WMU leader, church WMU leader, or other WMU connection. Please have your WMU endorser state their WMU connection on their endorsement. If you need to connect to a WMU leader in your state, please visit the State WMU Offices webpage for your state’s WMU contact information. You can find the WMU endorsement link here. A second endorsement should be completed by an academic source such as a high school/homeschool teacher, college advisor or professor. Please note, your application is considered incomplete until both of your references have submitted their endorsement form. Applications that are incomplete as of the close of business (4:30 pm CST) on December 31 will not be considered for a scholarship. Due to the timeline for making decisions, we are unable to make exceptions to this deadline. You are responsible for ensuring your references submit their endorsement by the deadline.
Other Forms of Financial Aid
In addition to scholarships, WMU offers other forms of financial aid to help students finance their education.
Grants
- WMU Achievement Grant: This is a need-based grant for undergraduate students pursuing their first bachelor’s degree. Students must complete the FAFSA for the appropriate aid year and be enrolled at least half time. The student aid index (SAI) cap is $10,999 for returning students and $20,000 for new students and new transfer students. This grant is renewable, but students must reapply for financial aid and meet eligibility criteria each year.
- Federal Grants: The FAFSA form is an application that students and families need to complete to apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans.
- Next NC Scholarship: Students attending a community college will receive at least $3,000. That’s more than the cost of full-time tuition, which means qualifying North Carolinians can choose from any of the 58 community colleges across the state and have all of their tuition and fees 100% covered. Those attending a public university in North Carolina will get a minimum of $5,000.
Loans
Graduate students are generally not eligible for the same grant programs that undergraduate students receive, meaning their aid package will consist mostly of loans.
Work-Study Programs
The FAFSA form is an application that students and families need to complete to apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans.
Employee Benefits
Western offers a discount program for benefits-eligible employees and a remission program for the spouse and dependent children of employees with full-time benefits eligibility. Remission is 75% of tuition and required fees (records initiation fee, enrollment fee, student assessment fee and EUP technology fee) for courses offered and taken for academic credit at WMU and requires an application. Students must be enrolled as undergraduate students in credit-bearing courses to receive this benefit. More information is available through WMU Human Resources.
Athletic Aid
WMU’s financial aid office disburses all athletic aid to student-athletes. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics offers athletic aid according to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) guidelines.
Maintaining Eligibility for Financial Aid
Full-time enrollment and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) are required for scholarships to pay. If students are not meeting SAP requirements, then they must complete an SAP appeal with the Office of Student Financial Aid. If student’s SAP appeal is granted, the reinstated SAP status will automatically allow the scholarship to pay and no additional scholarship appeal is necessary.
Streamlining Financial Aid Processes with Technology
WMU has made significant strides in streamlining its financial aid processes through the implementation of technology solutions like Ellucian's Student Forms and Campus Communicator. These tools have helped to reduce processing times, improve communication with students, and enhance the overall student experience.
The Shift to Digital Processes
Before adopting Ellucian's automation and personalization tools, WMU's financial aid office faced challenges with paper-based, manual processes. The office was extremely manual. There was a lot of paper coming in and a lot of students coming in and asking questions. It was a lot of manual work in order to process one form for one student.
Processing times were lengthy, taking up to 10 days. This led to long lines at the financial aid office, frequent questions, and frustration among the student body. The financial aid staff also felt the burden of sifting through thousands of documents.
Implementing Ellucian Solutions
To address these challenges, WMU implemented Student Forms and Campus Communicator, complementing their existing use of Scholarship Universe and Clear Cost.
Student Forms simplifies financial aid processes such as verification, professional judgments, and SAP appeals. Students can upload documents from any mobile device, saving time for both staff and students.
Campus Communicator delivers digital, mobile communications throughout the financial aid cycle. It provides students with the information they need, when they need it, directly on their mobile devices.
Benefits of the New System
The implementation of these tools has resulted in significant improvements:
- Reduced Processing Times: Verification processing times have decreased dramatically, from 10 days to as little as half a day.
- Improved Communication: Campus Communicator enables targeted messaging to specific student populations, ensuring they receive relevant information.
- Increased Efficiency: The financial aid staff can now focus on the needs of students rather than being overwhelmed by paperwork.
- Enhanced Student Experience: Students can complete tasks faster and receive timely updates, reducing frustration and improving satisfaction.
- Seamless Virtual Operations: The technology enables the financial aid office to operate effectively in a virtual setting, providing expanded access and opportunities for students.
The Impact of Technology on Student Success
By streamlining financial aid processes, WMU is better able to support students in their pursuit of higher education. The ability to quickly and efficiently process financial aid applications and communicate important information helps students stay on track and achieve their academic goals.
