The Work Ethic Scholarship Program is back for its eleventh year, once again awarding $1,000,000 in scholarships to individuals ready to roll up their sleeves and build a career in the trades. This program isn’t for the faint of heart-it’s for those willing to show up early, stay late, and put in the hard work to keep essential industries running. This is a partnership with Mike Rowe (dirty jobs). Applicants must enroll in an approved program, sign the S.W.E.A.T. Pledge, submit references, a video, transcripts, and verify school costs. The Work Ethic Scholarship Program is about recognizing people who understand the importance of work ethic, personal responsibility, delayed gratification, and a positive attitude. These are hardworking men and women getting trained to keep the lights on, water running, and air flowing. These are the people who show up early, stay late, and bust their butts day in and day out.
The Daniel Schommer Memorial Lineman Scholarship
The Daniel Schommer Memorial Lineman Scholarship honors the legacy of a dedicated lineman and family man while providing financial assistance to students pursuing the Utility Lineman Program at Pearl River Community College. Funded through donations from family, friends, and coworkers, this scholarship offers $500 per semester for up to four semesters to both traditional and non-traditional students. Created in memory of Schommer’s commitment to his trade, family, and faith, this scholarship ensures his impact continues by helping the next generation of linemen.
GreyStone Lineman School Scholarship Program
For aspiring linemen in Georgia, the GreyStone Lineman School Scholarship Program presents a valuable opportunity to offset the cost of training. Launched in 2024, this initiative provides four $7,500 scholarships to local individuals pursuing a career in powerline work. To qualify, applicants must be high school graduates (or equivalent), have a strong interest in distribution system line work, and meet physical, safety, and residency requirements. Partnering with Chattanooga Local 175, EPB, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, this initiative provides tuition assistance, stipends, and mentorship for students attending the Southeast Lineman Training Center. Participants can choose between a 15-week electrical program or an 8-week communications program, gaining hands-on experience that prepares them for apprenticeships with the Southeastern Line Constructors Apprenticeship and Training program or employment with major regional utilities.
International Lineman’s Rodeo Scholarship
The International Lineman’s Rodeo Scholarship is presented to candidates who meet the following criteria: a) a son or daughter of a Journeyman Lineman, or recommended by a Journeyman Lineman, b) have a High School Diploma or Equivalent GED, c) have a submitted letter of recommendation from their high school advisor or equivalent GED advisor and a friend or relative, and d) a written letter to the Scholarship Committee on why they should be selected to receive the scholarship including their financial need. The International Lineman’s Rodeo is held once a year in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The association has a scholarship committee that gives away 10 scholarships a year for students attending lineman schools.
Cobb EMC Line Worker Scholarship
The Cobb EMC Line Worker scholarship gives those interested in pursuing a career in line work the opportunity to receive a scholarship to cover educational expenses at an approve line worker school. The scholarship is open to any Georgia resident.

- National Public Power Pre-Apprenticeship: At only a couple hundred dollars, the National Public Power Program has been an industry leading path to help new entrants get the pre-apprenticeship training they need. It is only a five week program and the certificate can be achieved through fully online training. Discounted enrollment is often availible.
- VA Benefits: Bill Post 9/11 benefits, which pays up to 100% of program cost and housing. Once you graduate from SLTC, join a company, and enroll into an VA approved apprenticeship program, you are eligible for continued VA benefits through the On-the-Job or Apprenticeship Training Program along with also receiving a salary from your employer. Your BAH will drop every 6 months once you’ve started your apprenticeship, however, your pay will increase alongside that. Do your research on companies that have approved VA apprenticeship programs.
