The HOPE Scholarship is a state-funded scholarship available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement. This scholarship assists students with a portion of the tuition cost while attending a Georgia institution.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship, students must graduate from high school with a 3.0 cumulative GPA as calculated by the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC). Students must also be enrolled in a degree-seeking undergraduate program as a Georgia resident.

Award Amounts

The HOPE Scholarship pays a maximum of 12 credit hours per term. Actual payment amounts for HOPE will be prorated down for students enrolled in fewer than 12 eligible credit hours.

Length of Scholarship

For the school term in which a student reaches the attempted-hours or combined paid-hours limit of 127 semester hours, the student can be paid only for hours up to the attempted-hours or combined paid-hours limit.

Continued Eligibility

Students are evaluated for their continued eligibility in the HOPE Scholarship program at various checkpoints throughout their academic career. At each checkpoint, a cumulative 3.0 GPA must be earned, or the award will be lost. HOPE scholarship recipients must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA at the end of each spring semester to continue eligibility. In addition to these requirements, students must have a 3.0 cumulative HOPE GPA after the 30th, 60th, and 90th attempted hour.

Important Considerations for HOPE Scholarship

Attempted Hours Limit: All credit hours attempted after high school graduation are calculated when determining eligibility, even if Spelman does not accept them. Credit hours forgiven by the institution are included in the calculations.
Transcript Submission: It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that Spelman College has transcripts from all institutions of higher learning (post high school graduation) for the Office of Financial Aid to determine the student’s eligibility accurately.
GPA Calculation: The HOPE GPA does not necessarily match the cumulative GPA shown in Banner.
Reevaluation: After a student has attempted 90 credits, they cannot be reevaluated for HOPE Scholarship eligibility.
