Semester Honors

At the conclusion of each semester, the registrar identifies undergraduate students who are scholastically eligible for inclusion on the Dean's List. To qualify, students must achieve a GPA within the range of 3.0 to 3.29 while completing at least 6 credit hours during the term.

Semester Honors (Distinguished Scholar)

Students who demonstrate even higher academic achievement are eligible for Semester Honors, also known as Distinguished Scholar status. This recognition is granted to undergraduate students who earn a GPA of 3.3 or higher while completing at least 6 credit hours in a given semester.

Graduation Honors

With Honors

Students graduating with a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.29 are awarded the distinction of "With Honors." This honor acknowledges their consistent academic achievement throughout their undergraduate studies.

With Highest Honors

The highest level of graduation honor, "With Highest Honors," is reserved for students who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. This distinction signifies exceptional academic performance and dedication to scholarly pursuits.

Graduation with Distinction

A candidate for the baccalaureate degree with distinction must have a minimum of 65 hours of credit earned at Purdue University included in the computation of the overall GPA. The minimum overall GPA for graduation with distinction in each school shall be no less than the 90th percentile of the graduation indexes of the graduates in each school, for the spring semester, provided that the index is at least 3.30. The minimum overall GPA so determined in the spring for each school shall be applied for graduation with distinction for the subsequent summer session and fall semester. Of those graduates who qualify for distinction under these rules for the spring semester, the three-tenths of the baccalaureate graduates having the highest overall GPA shall be designated as graduating with highest distinction, irrespective of the schools from which they graduate.

Special Achievement Credit

Students who fail to meet the criteria of scholastic distinction but who, in the judgment of one or more faculty members, merit citation for distinguished achievement, shall have their names presented through the heads of instructional departments or directly to the Committee on Superior Students, together with such evidence of achievement as is available. Projects carried out by such students may receive special achievement credit.

Achievement of Community Engagement and Service (ACES)

The Honors College provides multidisciplinary learning opportunities and engaging academic opportunities to students from all majors. The curriculum can be completed within an existing plan of study, and leadership opportunities help students develop important life-long skills.

Honors College Requirements

Students who complete their academic, service, and participation requirements each year are given a gold seal on their diploma and a notation on their official transcript when they graduate. The Honors College encourages students to focus on completing 3 honors credits a semester, which is typically one class or one stacked course research project each semester. By joining the Honors College, students are required to complete 20 hours of community service each academic year. Community service is more than just a requirement for Honors College students or a line on a resume. It is a transformative experience that shapes the education of our students and contributes to the development, betterment, and growth of our local communities. Honors College students are required to attend at least two events per semester. Attending events can help students build community, develop social skills, and interact with their peers. Each year, the Honors College has a 5K walk to benefit a local not-for-profit organization. Every student is required to participate in this walk. Participation can include walking, setting up and break down the event and working the check-in table. Being philanthropic develops empathy and broadens our perspective of the world.

Honors Options (H-Options)

For students seeking to enhance their learning experience within regular courses, Purdue University offers H-Options. An H-Option is a contract between a professor and a student that allows honors credit to be earned in a nonhonors class.

How H-Options Work

After the first week of classes, students can approach the professor of a non-honors course and ask to add the H-Option. If the professor agrees, the student will contact the honors director requesting an H-Option contract. The H-Option offers an elevated level of education by adding tasks (such as extra projects or papers) that will also count toward the final grade. The professor will decide what to add and, with the student, will come to an agreement on how to make the course honors level. The contract will be signed by the student, the professor, the chair, and the honors director before it gets processed through the Office of the Registrar. A variety of things could be done for the honors project. The project could be an extension of the senior or capstone project or undergraduate honors thesis that is required for most majors. A project could also be the continuation of one of the your H-Options.

Honors Program Admission Criteria for Incoming Freshmen

If you are an incoming freshman, you have to meet one of the following criteria: be in the top 10 percent of your graduating high school class, have a 1200 or higher on the SAT or a 27 or higher on the ACT, or a 7 IELTS or an 87 TOEFL (for international students).

Additional Honors Program Information

Completing requirements for honors credits usually takes no extra time toward pursuing your degree since you can apply credits toward your major, minor, or certificate. If youâre interested in the Honors Program but donât meet the requirements, you might be able to take part in the program as you raise your GPA. With proactive planning and coordination with an Honors advisor, the curriculum can be adapted to any major. Many of the honors courses are general education courses that are required for every major. The Honors College team will work with you to create an adapted curriculum to meet your needs. Through engaging in research and leadership opportunities within the Honors College, you can build a great resume to support your graduate school application. The Honors College team is here to help you through your academic journey at PNW and beyond. Honors classes arenât designed to be more work than other classes. The style of instruction is likely to be more discussion-focused and you may be expected to participate more. Critical thinking skills will be honed through intentional assignments and activities. Because youâll be taking these classes with other honors students from all majors, the class discussion can be lively and exciting â you may learn as much from your classmates as your professor.

Recognition

After you have completed 9 credit hours of honors courses, you will receive a pin that can be worn at graduation. Having honors in your major will be listed on your diploma for that major. Downloadable/printable certificates of your academic honors are available by selecting your name in the list. A new page will open with a certificate signed by the Dean.
