Navigating the Admissions Landscape: Understanding Seton Hall GPA and Other Requirements
For prospective students setting their sights on Seton Hall University, understanding the admissions requirements is a crucial first step. This article provides a comprehensive overview of what it takes to be a competitive applicant, covering GPA expectations, standardized test policies, and other factors that contribute to a successful application. Seton Hall University is a Catholic university with over a 160-year tradition of educational excellence. A welcoming community, Seton Hall embraces students of all faiths and inspires students to become servant leaders who make a difference in the world.
Acceptance Rate: A Broad Overview
The acceptance rate at Seton Hall provides a general sense of the university's selectivity. With an acceptance rate of 73.3%, Seton Hall is considered lightly selective. This means that while the university isn't among the most competitive institutions, applicants still need to present a strong profile to gain admission. Because this school is lightly selective, you have a great shot at getting in, as long as you don't fall well below average.
The Importance of GPA
The GPA is a critical component of your application, reflecting your academic performance throughout high school. The average GPA at Seton Hall is 3.66. This requires you to be above average in your high school class. You'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with more A's than B's.
GPA Considerations
- Course Difficulty: You can compensate for a lower GPA with harder classes, like AP or IB classes.
- GPA as a Junior or Senior: If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications.
- Compensating with Test Scores: If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.66, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.
Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT
Seton Hall considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. Seton Hall requires that you either take the SAT or ACT. Seton Hall hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores, it's likely test flexible.
SAT Scores
The 25th percentile SAT score is 1240, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1380. In other words, a 1240 places you below average, while a 1380 will move you up to above average. Aim for a 1240 SAT or a 27 ACT or higher, and you'll almost certainly get an offer of admission.

ACT Scores
The average ACT score at Seton Hall is 30. The 25th percentile ACT score is 27, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 32. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 27 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can.
Test-Optional Considerations
Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Seton Hall will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.
Superscoring
Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore.
A Holistic Approach to Admissions
At Seton Hall, we take a holistic approach to reviewing your application. Note: Your admission decision relies not only on your GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but also on your coursework difficulty, extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.
Key Factors in Holistic Review:
- High School Transcript and GPA: Every school requires an application with the bare essentials - high school transcript and GPA, application form, and other core information.
- Coursework Difficulty: The rigor of your curriculum, as well as your standardized SAT and/or ACT scores. These are essential indicators of your ability to succeed at Seton Hall.
- Extracurricular Activities: Join your school band, a sports team or another group activity. Volunteer in your hometown. South Orange has tons of ways to be involved beyond just the college.
- Letters of Recommendation: Get teacher recs that speak to your character.
- Personal Statements: Write a stellar essay that shows Seton Hall University something they can’t figure out from the other parts of your application.
- Application Essays: Many schools, as explained above, also require SAT and ACT scores, as well as letters of recommendation, application essays, and interviews.
- Interviews: Many schools, as explained above, also require SAT and ACT scores, as well as letters of recommendation, application essays, and interviews.
- Demonstrated Interest: Spend your summer doing something that speaks to your values, personal growth, leadership qualities and other less quantifiable characteristics. Seton Hall University needs to see past your test scores and grades - they need to know that you will be a valuable and contributing member of their community.
