Shasta County Independent Study (SCIS)
Shasta County Independent Study (SCIS) offers an alternative educational pathway for students in grades 6-12 who thrive in independent learning environments. SCIS allows students to complete coursework independently under the guidance of a credentialed teacher. Students meet individually with an assigned teacher a minimum of one time per week. This voluntary program provides flexibility to accommodate students’ unique needs, interests, and learning styles. SCIS utilizes State and district-adopted curriculum to ensure students meet or exceed California graduation requirements. Instruction is offered at two convenient locations in Redding.
Tri Mountain Academy
Incarcerated youth receive education and support in the Shasta County Tri Mountain Academy, run by SCOE. General education teachers, resource specialists, and para-educators ensure students’ IEP goals and services are met. Students have the opportunity to participate in Shasta-Trinity ROP courses and some dual enrollment college courses.
Support for Foster and Homeless Youth
SCOE recognizes the unique challenges faced by foster and homeless youth and provides crucial support through school district liaisons. These liaisons act as a vital link between schools, families, and social service agencies, working diligently to remove barriers to education for these vulnerable student populations.

Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)
The Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) is a collaborative system established to ensure that all students with special needs have access to appropriate educational opportunities. The Shasta SELPA consists of 30 school districts (including the Mountain Valley Special Education JPA), the Shasta County Office of Education, and four charter schools that act as local education agencies for special education purposes. Each SELPA provides a range of special education services to local districts, including specialized programs for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, visually impaired, or have orientation and mobility challenges. The determination of the specific services or placements a student may receive is made by an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team, which typically includes the student's parent or legal guardian, as well as school personnel.

Early Childhood Education
SCOE's commitment to early childhood education is evident through its 19 preschool classrooms on 15 school sites, offering engaging, educational, and fun experiences for Shasta County children for low or no cost. SCOE recognizes that collaboration is key in early education.
