Discovery Education Sign-In Help: A Comprehensive Guide

Discovery Education provides a wealth of digital resources for students and educators. Accessing these resources efficiently is key to maximizing their impact. This guide provides comprehensive assistance with Discovery Education sign-in procedures, addressing various methods and troubleshooting common issues.

Student Sign-In Methods

Students can access Discovery Education through several methods, depending on their school or district's setup. It's essential to understand which method is in use to ensure a smooth login experience.

Single Sign-On (SSO)

Many schools and districts utilize Single Sign-On (SSO) for student access to various platforms, including Discovery Education.

  1. Navigate to the Discovery Education Login Page: Open a web browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari) and go to discoveryeducation.com or discoveryeducation.ca. Click the "Log In" button.
  2. Select Student Role: On the "Select Role" page, choose "Student."
  3. Choose SSO Method: Select the single sign-on method used by your school. This might be a specific platform like Clever or ClassLink.
  4. Enter Credentials: You will be redirected to a new login page. Enter the student's SSO credentials. These credentials are created and managed by your school or district, and Discovery Education Customer Support does not have access to them.

Username and Password

In some cases, students may use a dedicated Discovery Education username and password.

  3. Enter Username and Password: Enter the student's Discovery Education username and password.

Note: Usernames and passwords are created and managed by your school or district. Discovery Education Customer Support does not have access to them. You should have received sign-in instructions from your student's teacher, including the URL for the login page they should open and their username and password.

QR Codes

Teachers and administrators can generate QR codes to simplify student logins. This provides an alternative login option without replacing existing methods.

  3. Scan the QR Code: Use a device with a camera to scan the QR code provided by the teacher.

Generating QR codes for student logins serves as an additional option for logging in and does not replace any previous login methods. When generating QR Sign In codes, students must have a Discovery Education account and your classes must be set up. This feature can be turned off at the district or school level.

Finding Your School and Sign-In Method

If you're unsure which method to use:

  3. Search for Your School: Select "Search for my school."
  4. Enter School Name: Type the school name into the search field and select your school from the search results.
  5. View Sign-In Methods: The page will update to show the sign-in methods students can use. Select the appropriate option to sign in.

Google Single Sign-On (SSO) for Educators

Google Single Sign-On (SSO) allows teachers and students to log into Discovery Education using their district Google/Google Apps accounts.

Setting Up Google SSO

  1. Integration Readiness: Ensure your district is ready to integrate Google SSO with Discovery Education.
  2. User Configuration: Verify that users are configured correctly for Google SSO.
  3. DE SSO Request Form: Complete the DE SSO request form.

User Management Options

  • Google User Provisioning: Sync user data between Google and Discovery Education. Refer to the Google Technical Requirements guide for setup instructions. Ensure OUs/Groups are structured to distinguish specific school users.
  • CSV File Upload: User management can be handled by posting CSV files with the required data to Discovery Education’s SFTP server. This process can be automated. Class data, if desired, must be imported using the CSV import system.

Launching Google SSO

  1. Timing: Launching Google SSO will vary greatly between districts. It is recommended to launch on a Friday, at least two weeks after the agreement is returned and communication to users has begun.
  2. Communication: Communicating the new login method to users is critical for a successful launch.
  3. Existing Accounts: The existing teacher account list can be exported by navigating to My Admin > Recent Import Activity > Details > Export Teachers. Contact Discovery Education to discuss a launch plan for your district and what happens to existing Discovery Education user accounts and saved content and work.
  4. Username Conversion: Convert usernames that currently exist in Discovery Education to the Google SSO format.
  5. Hyperlinks: Advise users to log in via Google SSO before using saved hyperlinks.

Troubleshooting Google SSO

  • Google User Provisioning Errors: If you encounter errors setting up the Google User Provisioning connection, contact Google’s support team for assistance. Although Discovery Education provides a guide to setting up the connection within Google’s API, they cannot guarantee that the directions will remain accurate as Google changes their interface.
  • OU Structure Issues: If you cannot set up Google User Provisioning due to your OU structure, explore alternative options for syncing user data.

Google SSO: Cost and Agreements

Google SSO is free, and there is no separate agreement required. However, a DE SSO request form must be completed.
