Pranks to Play at Home

The Overnight Growth Spurt

Want to make someone think their feet grew overnight? Simply stuff the toes of their shoes with paper or cotton balls. For maximum effect, do this after they go to sleep. They will be groggy-and easier to prank-when they put their shoes on first thing in the morning.

Googly Eye Invasion

Get a pack of googly eyes with adhesive backs. Then, go around your house, sticking them to everything. Try doing all of the appliances or everything in the refrigerator.

The Classic Whoopee Cushion

Everyone loves a fart joke, so planting a whoopee cushion is the perfect prank for the whole family can enjoy. It’s also as easy as blowing up the cushion and then hiding it where the prankee usually sits.

The Spilled Beverage Illusion

This is a classic prank that’s pretty simple to play if you have a fake spilled cup. Just offer to get a soda or cup of coffee for someone. Then, place the fake spilled cup on the counter or floor and yell, “Oh no!

The Gravity-Defying Cup

This one is super easy. All you need is a cup or glass, a piece of paper, and something to write with. Balance the cup on its side on a table or countertop. Then, write a note that reads, “Don’t lift this!

Green Milk Surprise

This is a great prank to play on your mom or dad right around breakfast time. Just put a few drops of green food dye into a jug of milk. Then, screw the cap back on and gently shake the jug to mix in the dye and make the milk green. This prank will work with a see-through jug, but it’s better if it’s opaque.

Frozen Cereal Catastrophe

Pour your target’s favorite cereal and some milk into a bowl. Stick a spoon in it and then put the whole thing in the freezer for the night. The next morning, take the bowl out and put it where your target sits at the table.

Buggy Ice Cubes

Drop a few small fake bugs into an ice cube tray. Fill the tray with water and pop it in the freezer to make ice cubes. Once the cubes are frozen, offer to get your target a drink. Put one of the “buggy” ice cubes in their drink and give it to them. If they don’t notice the fake bug, wait until they take a drink and say something like, “Ew!

Wobbly Juice

Make some jello in the same color as your target’s favorite juice or drink. Pour it into a clear glass and pop a straw into it. Then, place the glass in the refrigerator to let the jello set up.

Toothpaste Oreo

Twist an Oreo cookie apart and scrape the cream off the pieces. Squeeze some plain, white toothpaste onto the cookie and then put the Oreo back together again.

Mysterious Mirror Message

To play this spooky prank, mix a few drops of dish soap into a cup of water. Dip a cotton swab into the soapy water and use it to write a message on the bathroom mirror.

Bubble Wrap Rug

All you need is a piece of bubble wrap for this easy prank. Take a piece of the bubble wrap that’s slightly smaller than the bath mat or rug in your bathroom. Pick up the rug and place the bubble warp in its spot.

Toilet Paper Message

Here’s another easy bathroom prank to pull off. Take a pen with you the next time you go into the bathroom. Unroll the toilet paper about 18 inches (46 cm) and write a message on it.

The Remote Control Trick

This prank is a good one to do at home in the morning so you can catch your family off-guard later that evening when they sit down to watch TV. Just use a small piece of clear tape to cover the sensor on the remote.

Refrigerator Snake Scare

Put a realistic-looking fake snake in the refrigerator. Try wrapping it around the bottom of the milk jug so it’s easy to see as soon as someone opens the door. Make sure it’s at about eye level so there’s no way they can miss it.

The Invisible Object

This is the easiest prank ever! All you have to do is call your target over to a window and then say something like, “Do you see it? It’s so cool!” Take it to the next level by describing the cool thing you “see.” When they say they don’t see anything, point and say, “It’s right there! For example, say, “It’s an owl the size of a German Shepard. How are you missing it?

Messy Toilet

This is a good prank to play on your parents, an older sibling, or a babysitter. Squeeze some chocolate syrup on your toilet seat and inside the toilet bowl. Add a little dripping down the front. Hide the chocolate syrup bottle. Go find your target and say something like, “Something’s wrong with the toilet. Be ready to clean this one up when the prank is done.

Lampshade Surprise

Play off of that fear by taping a fake bug or spider on the inside of a lampshade.

Brussels Sprouts Cake Pops

Get an adult to help you make “cake pops” using Brussels sprouts! Just poke cake pop sticks into Brussels sprouts.

Brown "E" Brownies

Trace the letter E in different sizes on a piece of brown construction paper. Then, cut the E’s out and place them in the bottom of a cake pan. Cover the pan with a piece of aluminum foil. Carry the covered pan to where your target is and ask them if they’d like some brownies. If you don’t have brown construction paper, use white and draw brown E’s on it with a brown marker. PS- I also make a tray of real brownies to bring out after they see this joke, but I keep them hidden until the April Fool’s Joke has been seen.

Pencil Imposter

This prank is perfect for that friend at school who is always asking to borrow a pencil. Paint the lead tip of one of your pencils with clear nail polish. Let the polish dry.

Crazy Candy Mix-Up

Get some Skittles, M&Ms, and Reese’s Pieces. Open all of the packages and put them into a baggie to take to school. Once you get there, ask your friends if they want some candy. Peanut allergies are fairly common.

Eating Rocks

Get a pack of candy rocks that are used in cake decorating. The more realistic they look, the better. Put the rocks in a bag in your pocket. Then, when you get to school, take out one of the rocks so they can see it. Your kids will think that you are crazy when they see this one, but it’s perfect! Pretend that you found some pretty rocks in the yard - show the kids how great they are and talk about where you found them. Then, when they are into your story, eat one. They won’t know that you are actually eating candy rocks!

Grape Eggs

This is a really good prank to play on a kid near Easter. Just get a bunch of grapes and some lightweight aluminum foil. Use small pieces of the foil to wrap the grapes so they look like chocolate easter eggs.

Ant Infested Cereal

If you want to prank a kid or help them prank another kid, get a bunch of fake ants. Put the ants inside a box of cereal. Then, shake the box to mix the ants up with the cereal.

Balloon Room

Try this fun prank that’s almost guaranteed to make a kid smile. While they’re at school, blow up a bunch of balloons and put them in their room.

Marshmallow Tree

Go outside and put a bunch of little marshmallows onto the branches of trees or bushes in your yard. Then, come back in and tell the kid you need some marshmallows for hot chocolate.

Mashed Potato Sundae

Let your kids think that you have a nice ice cream sundae waiting for them, but in all reality, it’s just mashed up potatoes in a nice, sundae bowl. (You can do this with muffins, too. Bake up mini meatloaves (instead of cake) in muffin tins and replace the “icing” with mashed potatoes. Our kids actually helped me make these to ‘trick’ their dad.

Spooky Fruit

Stick googly eyes on your kid’s foods when you’re packing their school lunches.

Undrinkable Juice (it’s JELL-O)

Fill cups with gelatin and tell the kids that it’s juice. Be sure to place a straw into the cup before you put it in the refrigerator to firm up overnight. In the morning, offer your kids a cup of juice and get ready when they try to take a sip.

The great Oreo switcheroo

Plate them an afternoon treat of what they think is just some harmless, yummy, and simple Oreos…but switch out the middle cream for something else (we used peanut butter last year - still edible, but definitely a trick they didn’t see coming! Oh- and we only did it to three cookies because we didn’t want to waste real Oreo cookies.

Pranks to Play at School

Backwards Desk Surprise

This one works well if your student desks have chairs that are not attached. Before the students arrive, turn some (or all!) of the desks backwards. Place each chair in its regular position, facing forward, pushed into the backwards desk. See how long it takes for them to realize that the opening is on the wrong side.

The April Fools’ Day “Test” Prank

Now depending on how good your students are at following directions, they may be able to save themselves a little bit of time on this assignment, but for those students who aren’t the greatest at reading directions…let’s just say they may find themselves doing some odd tasks!

Math Mayhem

Play around with your math teaching by either teaching your students an odd new math concept with ridiculous rules, or by purposefully stating only incorrect answers during the lesson.

Sticky Note Attack

Get a package of the small sticky notes, and over the course of a lesson, leave as many sticky notes on students and their stuff as possible without them knowing. Before you start the challenge, put a number on the board where the students will be able to see it that represents your goal. Once someone says something about the sticky notes, stop the class and announce that this was an April Fools’ prank and tell them to count the number of sticky notes on them and their belongings.

The Prize Switch

You probably have many cool prizes in your classroom prize bin, but an iPad? Surely nothing quite this spectacular has been up for grabs before! Alternatively, you can grab an old mousepad and tape the letter I to it.

Marshmallow Farming

As you’ve been discussing producers and consumers in the classroom, have you established where all those marshmallow farms sit on a food chain? After showing this video to your class, ask your students to share how they think they could help marshmallow farmers (this would be a fun Morning Meeting topic!).

The Wrong Date

Want to see how many students are paying attention to the date? Instead of writing the actual date on the whiteboard, try writing something ridiculous such as March 32, 2024, and see how many students call it out.

The Impossible Word Search

Hand out word searches with word banks that have been switched, so it’s impossible to find any of the words! Want to take things up a notch? You can create a search that’s stuffed with silly April Fools’ Day-themed words in our create-a-word search generator. You can even grab a word bank to add from any of these word searches. Alternative option: Print out two different word searches, and mix the word banks. You can also invent your own nonsense words and include three more if you want to spell out April Fools’ DAY.

Veggie Pops

Have your students been especially good lately? Announce before April Fools’ Day that you’ll be bringing in a tasty treat for everyone to enjoy. You can also keep it simpler by unwrapping large lollipops and using them to cover raw brussels sprouts. Add sticks to the bottom and you have yourself some veggie pops. These convincing-looking trickster sweets are sure to be the hit of your April Fools’ pranks.

Desk Mix-Up

Need a simple April Fools’ Day prank for the classroom that doesn’t require any planning? Show up to school five minutes earlier than you usually do, and turn students’ desks around or mix up their chairs.

The Twin Swap

Do you teach a set of identical twins? Try pulling a prank on a fellow teacher by swapping the students’ classrooms in the morning, and see how long it takes for them to notice. Of course, you’ll want to run this little prank by the parents first, as well as gauging your students’ feelings about this sort of swap. Some identical twins will be on board, while others would not.

Stapled Work

If your students are accustomed to entering the classroom and grabbing their morning work, you can use this as an opportunity to sneak in an early morning April Fools’ Day prank. Grab the first page of their work, and staple it to several more sheets of paper, stapling all around so it’s extra difficult to get inside.

Googly Eye Decor

Not in the mood for a prank? Try sticking googly eyes to items in your classroom to make your inanimate objects come to life.

Prank Phone Calls

Refrigerator Running

Kids have been making this prank call for generations…and it’s still just as much fun. To play it, just call a friend or family member and ask them if their refrigerator’s running.

Pig’s Feet

Call a butcher shop or the meat department of your local supermarket. The person who answers the phone will usually ask how they can help you. Just ask if they have pig’s feet.

The Missed Call

Call a random number. Then, when the person answers, act like they’re the one who called you. And then, hang up!

Other Pranks

Soap Imposter

This clever prank is really good because it uses a regular bar of soap, so the kid will never suspect anything is wrong until they’ve already been pranked. Just take a dry bar of soap and paint the top with a clear coat of nail polish.

Whoopee cushion’s galore.

Do your little ones have a favorite chair to set in? Stick a whoopee cushion under it and watch ’em jump from the noise!

Important Considerations

  • Age Appropriateness: Save pranks for kids who are over 4 years old. One of the things that makes pranks fun is that the target recognizes the prank quickly after it happens and laughs along with the prankster. Keep pranks simple and fun for kids under 12. Keep pranks kid-friendly and age-appropriate so everyone understands what’s going on and has fun.
  • Individual Sensitivities: Choose pranks that are appropriate for the specific kid. However, they can also really upset some kids. Some people just don’t like pranks, and that includes kids.
  • Harmless Fun: I know this may go without saying, but make sure the results of your prank are harmless. You never want to embarrass a student or colleague or put them in an awkward situation.
  • Moderation: It can be easy to let April Fools’ take over the whole day, but if there is a trick in every part of the day, students will most definitely catch on, so it is best to intersperse some regular assignments in with all the extra stuff.

The Educational Value of Pranks

Pulling pranks doesn’t have to be the limit to celebrating April Fools’ Day in the classroom. Use the holiday as a chance to talk about hoaxes, jokes, and more. Teaching about media literacy? We don’t have to tell you that the internet is a great resource for student research and also a quagmire of misinformation that can be confusing for students just learning how to do research and find credible sources.
