Sing and Learn: Educational Programs that Harmonize Learning and Fun
Introduction
Early childhood education is a critical period for developing foundational skills in language, literacy, math, and social-emotional learning. Educational programs that incorporate music and singing have emerged as powerful tools to engage young learners, enhance memory, and foster a love for learning. These programs leverage the inherent joy and cognitive benefits of music to make learning an enjoyable and effective experience. This article explores several such programs, highlighting their unique approaches and the positive impact they have on children's development.
The Power of Music in Early Learning
Research consistently demonstrates that music positively impacts brain development, particularly in areas related to memory, pattern recognition, and language acquisition. Sharing music helps children detect patterns and remember important information. Music increases children’s ability to easily retain information. The joy factor of music encourages a happy social-emotional environment. When children sing, read, spell, and learn, they establish a lifetime love for learning.
SING.PLAY.LOVE.®: A Journey of Discovery
SING.PLAY.LOVE.® is a high-quality early learning program designed by a team of child development experts. It helps you create a journey of discovery, creativity, and joy as you help your young child fall in love with learning. The program is designed under the leadership of Dr. Anne Meeker Watson, music therapist and early interventionist. Dr. Watson created the SING.PLAY.LOVE program because she is passionate about helping all young children love learning.
Key Features:
- Comprehensive Skill Development: The program's books, songs, music videos, and learning activities create engaging opportunities for children to learn skills for language, literacy, math, and social-emotional learning.
- Play-Based Learning: Play is critical for healthy brain development. The program recognizes this and incorporates playful activities to stimulate learning.
- Integrated Approach: The books are settings of song texts composed to teach specific skills, seamlessly blending music and learning.

Sing Out and Read Family Literacy Project: Catching Up Through Music
Sing Out and Read Family Literacy Project is a non-profit with a mission to help kids who are behind in reading catch up quickly with their grade level by using the magic of music. "There are a whole bunch of good things that happen with music in the brain that helps children remember and adults to remember what it is they're reading and seeing," explained Carlo Franzblau, co-founder and executive director of Sing Out and Read. To help turn the tide, students are given a computer to take home for 12 weeks so they learn at school and at home. Lopez is taking part in the Sing Out and Read Family Literacy Project. "It's fun to sing because I like singing and I like it when it tells me different words," shared Solona Lopez, a student in the program.
Addressing Reading Deficiencies:
Victoria Klug is a former fifth-grade teacher who now teaches the first grade at Dunbar Elementary School. "What I found is that children are missing the phonics and they're coming to me in fifth grade reading on a first-grade level, and they're not able to access the instruction that is provided to them in the general education classroom," she said. Franzblau, the founder of Sing Out and Read, says more than two-thirds of third-graders are not reading on their level and he's determined to improve those numbers with notes. "If you can't read, you can't succeed and certainly not in our society today," Franzblau stated. "We live in a knowledge society, a knowledge economy."
Testimonials and Real-World Impact
The effectiveness of these programs is reflected in the positive feedback from educators, parents, and children alike.
- Educator's Perspective: "I could not have succeeded in teaching pre-k and kindergarten without them! Children identify with the big bold pictures and text, as they sing and increase their vocabulary. I love seeing these simple solutions from “Sing & Read” that assist our youngest children!"
- Teacher's Experience: "Our entire school enjoys using “Sing & Read”. It brings back the basics and reinforces the principles of the Science of Reading during transitions, large groups, and centers. Our teachers favored using the books, songs, and e-stories to connect FUN back into early childhood! This program uses songs, music, and books as amazing tools to engage children with stories in both English and Spanish. The music is so helpful to connect all diversities and languages. The parents enjoy the little books that the children bring home to sing with the families."
- Music Integration: "When you talked about adding the literacy component in your training, I felt like that was the missing piece for me that was needed. We do a "journal" reading, but it just didn't fit who I was. I think doing the music is doing the same thing…but adding an element of what was really missing and what I know is SO good for the classroom and kids. THANK YOU! The kids are LOVING Peter Rabbit."
- Personal Connection: Risa Cohen is a talented musician and vocalist. She is kind, caring and has a natural way of connecting with children. I have seen firsthand the way my children and their classmates hang on her every word and note. "Risa has an amazing class!"
- Toddler's Development: Toddlers and Three-year-old children learn new vocabulary words and increase oral language by singing to familiar repetitive tunes. Children learn their basic skills through music and build a strong foundation for emergent literacy. Colors, Numbers, Shapes, Alphabet, and Nursery Rhymes - such a fun program to reduce stress and build social-emotional connections!
